AMD Releases New GPU, APU lineup and details ‘Zen’ Core

I just got an interesting email from the guys at AMD. We have been expecting a new launch for a while, but I thought it would be around Computex or something similar, not now – but here it is!

GPUs

Lets start with the new GPU lineup. Technically, it isn’t availalbe yet – it is only being shipped through OEMs like HP, meaning it is likely their lower end cards. This means you can expect a full flagship GPU event pretty soon from AMD. While the press release was pretty hollow, really only talking about the new APU lineup that we will get to in a second, they did make it clear the new GPUs will be the 300 series, like we all expected really… But, it’s nice to know they are coming – and soon. Personally, I think this needs to be a pretty big game changing card for AMD, as they really aren’t in the best position, and are in desperate need of more market share.

Something they dropped in the email regarding the new GPU lineup surprised me. We have all heard that Samsung are stucking flash memory modules together to get higher density memory for their SSDs, and phones, and you might have even heard that Nvidia are planning on using a similar technology to increase performance and VRAM capacity on their next GPU lineup, but this one surprised me. AMD are using, ‘Die stacked High Bandwidth memory’ on their next 300 series cards. A rather large leap forward for them – and something I hope provides a tangible difference that we can show.

Lastly for graphics, they also announced that their new M300 series chips will be shipping in Alienware, Dell, HP, Lenovo and Toshiba laptops soon – but again gave no details on the chips, model numbers or really anything… My guess is that since the only gaming brand in the list was Alienware, these chips (like the desktop cards) are going to be the lower end cards – not the flagships. While it is nice to see new stuff from AMD, I’m waiting for the meat and potatoes here. I want to see the game changing flagship cards that blow even the Titan X out of the water. I guess we often root for the underdog and in this case, AMD fits the bill.

APUs

They gave a bit more info on these, in the table listed below – but long story short, they released their lower end APUs which are more power efficient, better performing and run a tiny bit cooler – no huge surprise here (but we will still be interested to see how well they perform).

Another thing they mentioned was that their existing A10-A4 lineup will support Windows 10, DirectX 12 and FreeSync, OpenGL 4.4, OpenCL 2.0, Mantle and a few other things – which is nice to know that the existing products are being supported still – especially with things like DX12 and Windows 10. We are yet to see FreeSync in the flesh ourselves, but if it is anything like Gsync (something we have seen), then it really will be a pretty game changing technology that will be worth the cost once it is more readily available and the kinks are worked out.

CPUs

This one is the exciting one for me. They are talking about their ‘Brand new’ Zen architecture cores, with a new redesigned cache subsystem – something that was almost fundamentally broken in their Bulldozer and Piledriver cores. They suggested in their email that instructions per clock would be improved by a whopping 40% – which is a well needed to bring AMD into what feels like the 21st century in terms of performance (maybe even rival Intel’s X99 platform if it really is that good, which unfortunately I have my doubts about).
