QNAP TS-453mini NAS Review

I’m gonna start off by saying that I deliberately haven’t talked about performance much, as the NAS (especially with the dual gigabit ports in teaming mode) is more than capable of maxing out the throughput of the hard drives, and my network connection! I did, however, do a torture test, with two phones, two tablets, two PCs and an Apple TV where the PCs where writing large files, and the rest were streaming 1080p videos, and it handled it perfectly – there was a slight slow down in transfer speeds and the videos did take a second or two to buffer, but I was amazed at how much this one little box can handle!

Now, onto the images above! As you can see, the Setup process was incredibly easy, with the ability to set it up as a business NAS, or home use, and set a static IP, as well as set up the hard drive volumes and configs. Once you get into the web UI, you’ll notice it looks a lot like a Linux desktop (because technically it is), and makes it very easy to work with. You can download apps from the app store, I recommend the Virtualisation server, QAirplay (if you have an Apple TV or Chromecast), HybridDesk Station (and all the apps that come with it) and the Cloud link app which lets you use the NAS from anywhere in the world by remotely logging in using your home internet connection!

I mentioned it has a billion and one features, so here is a list of my favourites (I have found so far..)

  • Virtual Machines
  • Airplay for Apple TV
  • Cloud Link
  • On-the-fly transcoding of a hot folder (no app needed)
  • Web server (full, no app needed)
  • Mail Server (difficult to set up since ISP’s mostly block port 25 traffic, but super cool to have)
  • HybridDesk
  • Built in (no app needed) VPN client and server
  • Antivirus (built in)
  • Itunes server (built in)
  • MySQL server (built in)
  • Port Trunking (teaming) network traffic

One other thing you get it the Qfinder program for Windows, Mac and Linux, which lets you create virtual drives (iSCSI), folders, map network drives, see hardware usage, upload files, configure most of the settings and a whole load more! It is a great piece of software and one I’m keeping on my PC!

If you want more info on these and the many other things it can do, let me know and we will make a full article/video on the software! But to round off the software before we cover the conclusion on the next page, I have to say it is the most rounded, polished, feature-rich UI and software suite I have seen so far, and I am very gladly going to be keeping this as my daily use NAS!
