Hubsan X4 H107L Review

This micro-quad is tiny, fast and cheap – and I love it! I bought this myself, and it is incredibly easy to learn – while still presenting a challenge in expert mode!

Hubsan X4 H107L Review.00_00_01_22.Still001As I said above, this thing is a great little starter quad. For (as of writing) around £30 shipped, you can get this 8cmx8cm quadcopter, with a remote Tx / transmitter), a USB charging cable, a quick start guide/user manual and a battery included in the quad itself.

Hubsan X4 H107L Review.00_01_19_22.Still003Now, I started the video off with a rant, and I feel I have to do the same here. I bought this on Ebuyer because they had it in stock, and I wanted it quickly – so I payed for next day delivery (over £8!). When I saw that my parcel was being delivered by Yodel (UK based delivery company), I was a bit mad as my previous encounters with them included my first PC build where I had bought around £800 of PC hardware, which was left on my very open doorstep, in the freezing cold rain, without having anyone to sign for it (I was at school at the time, the box was left in the rain for over 5 hours). So as you can tell, I had a grudge. They, unsurprisingly, met my expectations again with this delivery – as you can see in the picture above, it has taken an impact on the side, and has two ripped flaps at the bottom and an impact on one of the corners. That is pretty s**t for such an expensive delivery (half the price of the item). Anyway, onto the product!

This charges via USB with the included adapter, as it is a 1 cell battery that runs at 3.7V. The USB charger lights up red when charging, and turns off when full – so you know you are ready to go! You also get a small pack of extra propellers (4 total to replace the 4 included on the quad) – which is nice, although I do recommend picking up some more as I’ve already broken one only a few days into having it!

The transmitter that comes included is pretty cool. It’s in the shape of a game pad – and while not standard for quadcopters and RC stuff in general, is cool and works relatively well. The transmitter features up/down trim for all axis, including throttle, and features and LCD screen which allows you to adjust settings and change the dual rates it has built in. The way you access the dual rates, shown as ‘expert’ mode on the Tx, is by pressing down on the right stick, the LED flashes red and green, and this is where you can do flips with it (by throwing the right stick against the way you want to flip, then quickly the way you want to – so to flip left, you push the stick all the way to the right then all the way left, then the quad will flip for you).

You will need 4 AAA batteries if you actually want to use this though, but since the 240mAH battery (below) takes around 40 minutes to charge, with around 4-10 minute flight times, you could easily get to the shop and back with some batteries while it charges!

This LIPO battery, as stated above, is a 1 cell 3.7V, 240mAh battery, but can be replaced with a larger 500mAh battery if you choose to buy it! There are actually a lot of accessories and replacement parts you can buy relatively cheaply from places like Amazon!

One of the nice features of this is a crash protection feature, where the bottom half of the arm snaps off (it can be easily pushed back on) to allow the force to affect something, without damaging anything – which is really nice!

If you want to know how to calibrate the controller and quad’s gyro – check the video out, but here is an attempt at a written version! To reset the transmitter:

  • Turn it off
  • Push both sticks to the top left corner (seen in picture)
  • Turn it on while keeping them there
  • Rotate the sticks to the maximum limits all around a few times, then hold any one of the trim buttons down until the LED turns full Red.

To reset the accelerometer and Gyro in the quad:

  • Place the quad on a flat and level surface
  • Turn it and the controller on
  • Hold the left (throttle) stick down to the right bottom corner
  • Wiggle the right stick from maximum left to right until the blue lights on the quad flash

As I said above, this is really easy to learn to fly, although I did want to point out that as you can see in the image above, in expert mode with the rates set to 100%, the quad will literally fly 90 degrees to the floor… It also goes incredibly quickly, and seems to have a pretty decent range! Watch the video for more flying! One thing to note is that when the quad is low on battery, all the LEDs repeatedly flash, to let you know it is dying and needs charging.
