So you’ve got nearly £3000 to spend on a new gaming PC, and you want something small, stylish, powerful, and pre-built. Well, MSI thinks their new Trident X is worthy of your money. Let’s see if it actually is…

The first, and most obvious thing we have to talk about is the styling. It’s rather pretty. It’s got RGB lighting on the front and sides, and even comes with the tempered glass side panel you see here in the box, along with a more standard steel side panel with vents, if you prefer.

Those vents – both for the GPU and CPU on either side, are quite necessary though, as this tiny beast is hiding an i7 9700K and an RTX 2080. A rather powerful combo, enough to get 60FPS in most games at 4K even at ultra settings. Running down the rest of the specs, we’ve got 32GB of DDR4 in this model, along with a well cooled, easily upgradable M.2 512GB SSD on the back of the motherboard, and a 2TB HDD buried a bit further in, and impressive cooling too, with a max temp on the CPU of only 78°c and max GPU temp of 72°c, while staying remarkably quiet, even while gaming.

Speaking of gaming, lets take a look at the benchmark results!

I mentioned earlier that the M.2 SSD is upgradable, but it isn’t just that. It’s a standard motherboard and GPU too, so if you want to swap the motherboard, CPU RAM or GPU out in the future, it’s pretty easy, which is awesome, since a lot of these smaller form factor systems rarely make it that simple.

Really, the only downside to this system is the price. It’s £2700 for the model I have, and that’s kinda crazy. If you were to build the same spec system yourself, even paying full price for the OS, you are looking at nearly DOUBLE the price of the parts for the same thing. Even a pre-built system from OverclockersUK which, yes, isn’t the same form factor, but it’s a full £700 cheaper for the same spec. That’s a bit mad.

Nevertheless, it’s an impressive bit of kit and if you want this form factor, AND this performance, then MSI’s premium price tag is what you’ll have to pay to get your hands on it. Would I put one on my desk? If I needed the performance in the small form factor, then yes, I would. But if the form factor wasn’t too important to me, then no way.
