Last year I reviewed the Ryzen version of the last gen Acer Nitro 5, and absolutely loved it. It was a great experience to use overall, and brilliant value for money. This year, they’ve pumped up the specs with the Intel version rocking a GTX 1650 and an i5-9300H. Let’s take a look.

Spec wise, you’ve got an i5 9300H, a quad core with hyperthreading, the GTX 1650, 8GB of RAM, and a few different storage options that we’ll cover in a sec. But first, lets see how well that spec does in games, mostly on low settings here at 1080p.

Display wise it’s a 1080p 60hz IPS panel. It’s not touch screen, but is pretty nice to look at, so no major complaints. They have shrunk the bezels from last gen, which I’m a big fan of, making it look a lot more modern and sleek.

Keyboard wise it’s pretty much the same as last gen, a little mushy but still a great and reliable keyboard. The trackpad is much the same, usable, decent palm rejection, no complaints.

I/O wise you are looking at 2 USB 3 ports, 1 type C, HDMI, gigabit ethernet, a USB 2 port and a 4 pole headphone jack, along with DC in, so a decent enough setup too.

What was most interesting to me was taking the cover off the bottom, first you’ll notice how much heatsink material it has, which is probably why it did such a good job at keeping both the CPU and GPU cool, and (at least for a gaming laptop anyway) somewhat quietly too.

You’ll also notice the dual M.2 slots, along with the 2.5” drive bay, which in my model are empty barring one M.2. This is great as it means you can upgrade this at a later date to have considerably more storage. You can also upgrade the RAM, as it’s just 2 DDR4 SODIMMs populated with 4GB sticks, so if you decide you need 16, just swap them out for 8GB versions and you are good to go.

For me this is a brilliant machine, it’s price tag of around £900 does put it a lot closer to some stiff competition with GTX 1660 laptops not that much more money, but a good bit more performance, but if you don’t quite have enough for them, this is definitely a good shout.

It games well, and is an enjoyable experience basically no matter the title, and overall I really don’t have any major concerns with it, besides the price tag, which itself isn’t too bad. Would I put one on my desk? Yes, I’d be happy to. While I will be interested in checking out the new 3rd gen Ryzen model when it’s available, this is certainly a great option and one that I am more than happy to recommend.
