Over the last few weeks, I’ve reviewed a few cheap brand-name gaming headsets, like the Razer Kraken X – a £50 gaming headset that I didn’t love, and the Corsair HS35 – a £40 headset that I generally prefer, but don’t love.

Enter, the Asus TUF H3, a headset that I do love. Well, almost. See, at the £50 price point you have to compromise on at least one aspect, whether it’s sound or mic quality, comfort or build quality, and it’s quite common to compromise on all of them, or try and specialise on one, but I have to say, the TUF gets it pretty spot on with everything, except build quality.

It really is this things achilles heel, it is a plastic and metal construction which would normally be a good sign, but the material choice of those plastics, well isn’t great. The first time I touched it, I was pretty put off as, if I’m being honest, the plastics and especially the faux leather headband material feel pretty anemic. I don’t expect this to last you overly long, and with this much flex in the head band, I don’t expect it to survive a reasonable fall from your desk, or the accidental a damn i sat on it that can happen from time to time.

Where it redeems itself is, well, everywhere else. Lets start with the audio quality. It’s impressive. Now, it’s not amazing, it’s no where near as good as say the Audiotechnica ATH-G1WL I reviewed recently, but it’s around 1/5th the price. It’s still pretty clear and crisp, with good but not overpowering bass and impressive vocals. As you can expect with a closed back, cheap headset, the sound stage is pretty non-existent, but that’s fine.

Gaming wise, it’s pretty clear too, nice and easy to hear footsteps or gun shots from across the map, nothing really wrong there. It’s also comfortable, throughout my testing I didn’t have a single issue with comfort as it was light on the head, not too tight while still being reasonably secure, and pretty easy to wear for long sessions too.

If you are worried about mic quality, don’t be.

And if you are wondering if it’ll work on consoles, the short answer is yes. It’s just a 3.5mm 4 pole jack on the headset, with a 4 pole to separate mic and headphone jack adapter in the box too, so that’s great to see as well.

So, if you can get over the pretty nasty feel and quality of the headset, then you’ll find a great sounding, comfortable headset you can game on for hours, or chill with some music, all for around £50 when it becomes available in around October.

Would I put one on my desk? Well, like the others, personally no as my Audiotechnicas are much better, but as long as the price is right, I’d be more than happy to recommend this to anyone looking for a cheap gaming headset, even over the Kraken X and HS35 – with the only caveat being the HS35 is cheaper, so if you can’t afford the H3, then that is still a good shout.
