Now that it’s miserable weather outside again, now is the perfect time to be warm and cozy inside with a new home theatre projector, right? Well, Viewsonic thought so, since they sent over their X10-4K for me to look at. Yes, you heard that right, 4K. Let’s see if it’s any good.

So of course we have to start with that big claim, yes it’s 4K. Proper 4K too, which means you get an impressively crisp image which is brilliant for a home theatre machine. It’s not the brightest in the world, with a claimed 1000 ANSI lumens, although was generally a bit lower than that in testing. Colours were nice to the eye, with a few different modes that can alter them slightly. It’s an LED, DLP projector, meaning there is no bulb to replace and should last you a fair while which is great.

I should stress, this is NOT a gaming projector, possibly not even casual gaming as the input lag is insanely high. Using one of the HDMI inputs with frame interpolation on, there was a significant and noticeable lag when just moving the cursor around. That’s easily over 200ms of lag. That can be reduced by turning frame interpolation off, but it’s still pretty high at a full 117ms, aka far, far too high for gaming of almost any kind.

Software wise, this has it’s own operating system. It’s somewhat like Android TV, but definitely isn’t. It’s pretty clunky, has a few bugs like having a maximum password length for wifi – if you use the included remote to type it, if you plug in a keyboard it’ll work fine – and while it does have an app store, stuff like plex was buggy at best, and entirely broken at worst.

You do also get 2 Harmon Kardon speakers built in, which in my testing were pretty muted and not an enjoyable listening experience, which kind of nullifies the feature that lets you use it as a bluetooth speaker with the actual projector part turned off.

Physically, it looks great. It’s a gunmetal grey metal shell, with a leather wrapped handle which does feel nice and sturdy, and a leather covered backing panel that magnetically attaches to the back to cover the I/O when not in use. And the I/O you have is pretty good, you’ve got AC in, a spot for the WiFi dongle we will cover in a sec, SPDIF, audio in and out, 2 HDMIs, USB C, MicroSD, ethernet and USB 2 and USB 3 ports.

That WiFi dongle slot is really confusing. Because it’s just an embedded USB Port WITH A COVER OVER IT, to which you plug in the INCLUDED cheap USB WiFi dongle, which had horrific signal – it was just a metre from my router, and had only 2 bars of signal. Seriously. Why didn’t they just build WiFi into the projector itself, with a nice long antenna inside the casing? Why give you a cheap and terrible USB WiFi dongle, AND A PLACE TO LITERALLY HIDE IT INSIDE, without just building it in as a feature? I really don’t know.

What I do know is that overall, this projector looks great on paper. 4K, reasonably bright, great I/O, stylish, premium look and all, but in practice really falls short of being a truly desirable option, one that costs around £1300 right now. While that certainly isn’t bad for a proper 4K projector, the clunky OS, the cheap feeling remote and confusing design choices, like the WiFi dongle, make it a tad hard for me to recommend.
