I’ve used the Logitech MX Master pretty much since it came out a couple of years ago, and absolutely love it. It’s ergonomic shape, gesture support and, if I’m honest, the most important part, the magspeed scroll wheel, makes this almost a perfect mouse. So when logitech said they have a brand new version with a redesign, it peaked my interest. Could logitech improve on perfection? Well, lets find out.

Lets start off with what the MX Master line is not, a gaming mouse. While of course you can game on it, and of course I did, it’s not designed for it. It’s heavy at 141g, and more importantly its sensor, it’s a laser mouse – not optical – meaning while it tracks well on even glass, it’s not exactly gaming grade.

What it is for is the ultimate productivity and daily use mouse with a new ergonomic shape that fits comfortably in the hand, makes it easy to use it for hours on end and lets you easily reach every button and scroll wheel on it.

Which brings me nicely onto its features – I’ll start with that scroll wheel. Logitech call this their “MAGSPEED” wheel because it used magnets to offer both the usual notchy feeling scroll, or either by pressing the button just behind the wheel, or just by spinning it fast, it then spins almost endlessly, and silently too. It’s brilliant for scrolling through documents or web pages, especially if you are just trying to get to one bit really far down the page, and is something I’ve grown so accustomed too, I don’t think I’d use another mouse full time without it.

Then there is the gestures. This is where you push the button concealed in the thumb support down, then move the mouse forward, backwards, left or right to activate a function – for me pushing the button down and sliding forward presses F5 to refresh web pages, a very handy addition. I don’t tend to use the others, although they are now offering program specific modes, where it will (slowly) switch what mode its in depending on what application is open – say premiere pro for example.

The same can be said about the side scroll wheel – a very nice knurled aluminium wheel with the nicest, smoothest feeling scroll ever, very satisfying – and the two also very nice side buttons. Those are well reinforced and have a nice tactile bump to them, without being stiff. Great job on the quality Logitech.

Tracking wise, like I said this tracks on pretty much anything, which is nice because it still has the button on the bottom that lets you switch to up to 3 devices that either have the logitech unify receiver already connected, or via bluetooth, which I think is excellent.

What makes it even more excellent is their new “Flow” option, that lets you not only seamlessly transition the mouse between devices, but also copy and paste – literally – files between machines. Not bad eh? Now that’s not a feature I would personally use much, but I know plenty of people who would, so for them it’s a great value add.

Which I suppose, brings us to the main downside of the MX Master 3, it’s value, or more specifically it’s price. It’s £100, more than double the original MX Master I’ve come to know and love and doesn’t actually offer than much more functionality than the original, besides the flow feature and FINALLY, USB C fast charging with up to 3 hours of usage from just 1 minute of charging. I know, crazy.

So for me, since I already have it, I’ll be swapping, but for those who are currently looking to pick one up, you’ll have to balance whether the newer shape, USB C fast charging, and “Flow” feature is worth it over the original and the price difference.
