MSI’s MAG271CQR monitor was already one of the most popular 1440p 144hz monitors last year, with it’s VA panel and decent overall performance, and especially good price. So, when I heard they had a new version with similar specs, with a bump in refresh rate to 165hz, I had to take a look. You will want to stick around for this. But first, if you haven’t already, consider subscribing for more videos like this one!

Lets start with just how impressive this thing is. So, it’s still VA, 1440p, but now up to 165Hz which is great, but more impressively it’s input lag, as tested with the time sleuth, is between 11 and 12ms, which is pretty decent. On top of that, the panel’s response time, black to white anyway, is just 3ms which is brilliant. Ghosting is there slightly, but it’s not something I could notice unless I’m looking at high speed footage so I wouldn’t worry.

Gaming on it is smooth as you’d expect. While I like playing fast paced games like CS:GO, I can see this being well suited to pretty much any genre. Thanks to that low input lag and response time it felt responsive and was easy to hit shots – even against bots – that I would normally struggle to on slower monitors.

What makes this monitor even more impressive is that on top of having really very good results in input lag and response time, it’s also brilliant for colours. My SpyderX reported it does well above 100% of the sRGB spectrum, and 93% of the DCI-P3 spectrum, which is insane for a non-IPS monitor. Seriously, that’s incredible.

Now, it isn’t perfect, side to side viewing angles are pretty awful as the brightness dropoff is intense, and the stand doesn’t have any swivel support, so you’ll have to move the whole thing to do even minor adjustments, that you will definitely want to do if you aren’t sitting perfectly square on, but since this is specifically a gaming monitor, I wouldn’t mark it down too heavily for that.

While we are talking about the stand, it’s got a decent amount of height adjust, and tilt built in, but like I said no swivel support, nor portrait mode, not that you’d really want it on a curved monitor like this. The base does have a pretty big footprint, and protrudes out the back a fair bit, but thanks to the front legs being more like spokes it’s not too obtrusive on a desk.

Inputs wise, you’ve got 2 HDMIs, a DisplayPort, and a USB 3 hub too. Plenty for your PC on DisplayPort and 2 consoles on the HDMIs – although I should note I can’t really recommend this for console gamers. Neither current gen console supports 1440p properly as far as I know, and certainly not high refresh rate 1440p, so I would give this one a miss if that’s what you are after.

Taking a look at the back, it’s still got that RGB strip, because of course it does, and otherwise it’s a pretty subtle design especially from the front, it’s not distracting or gaudy which is great.

Now here’s the real kicker, it’s the same price as the last one, £400, $400. That is an amazing price for a monitor this impressive. You get a monitor with adaptive sync, that’s 1440p 165hz, with a fast response time and good input lag time, and it’s even got amazing colours if you want to use it for video or photo editing, 3d modelling or anything else. It’s an amazing option.
