Gigabyte Brix S 5200 Review
This is possibly the best HTPC/ Office PC around, with its incredibly small footprint, good performance, low noise and nice aesthetic.
This is Gigabyte’s Brix S. Its an 114.4mm long, 107.6mm wide and 46.8mm tall PC, and requires next to no floor space (since it can be put on a VESA mount which comes in the box). Inside, it houses a surprising amount of hardware. Starting with the CPU, in this model (although others are available) you get an Intel i5-5200U clocked at 2.2GHz as stock. If you get the standard barebones version from Amazon, you’ll get two SODIMM slots that can support up to 8GB modules each (totalling 16GB), an mSata slot that can be used for an SSD, and finally a 2.5″ Sata drive rail and connections. If you went for the pre-built option from Ambros (the suppliers of this review sample), you’ll get the option of including anything from 2-16GB of SODIMM RAM (ours has 8GB), anything from a 500GB HDD to 1TB SSD (ours has a 1TB HDD) and finally an mSata slot for anything from a 30GB to 512GB SSD. This amazing machine not only has AC Wifi, Bluetooth and a strange one – NFC – but it also has a maximum power usage of 65W from the wall (pretty awesome right?).
On the front, you’ll find two USB 3 ports and a 4 pole headphone/microphone port. On the top, you’ll get some glossy plastic and a silver (with blue LED backlight) power button. The back is made up of a kensington lock hole, DC power in, HDMI, Mini-DisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet and two more USB 3 ports. Overall a pretty comprehensive I/O for such a small system. There is also ventilation on either side, and a bit on the back too, to ventilate the single fan that runs almost silently (until a very long time on full load).

If you take a look at the bottom, you’ll find four very easy-to-remove screws and a metal tab you can use to remove the bottom cover – be careful with this as the sata power and data cable (if you bought the pre-built version – is connected. Once you open it up, you’ll find the customisable components/aspects. See below.
Why buy one?
If you’re like me, you will probably have skimmed through this article to find the specs, then this heading caught your eye. So let me answer that question. This PC is amazing for replacing your clunky old desktop at work, or the dusty Sky box (cable for any americans) sitting under your TV. Since this can be VESA mounted, you can grab a bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo and go wild with Netflix, and your own movie collection that you can stream from a NAS or external HDD. On the office side, it handles day-to-day tasks like word and excel very well – and could be a great little programmer’s PC.
My thoughts
To round this review up, I’ll let you know what I think. I like the look of it, and besides the glossy plastic on top, is almost perfect in size and design – since it’s subtle, yet powerful. As I said, power, for it’s size – it has in buckets. Functionality, it’s got too with AC wifi, bluetooth, NFC, USB 3 and a few other tricks too. The only problem I see it that for the pre-built version, you’ll be running around £600 for a similar spec system to the one we have. That isn’t the cheapest, especially when you aren’t far from some more gaming class products!
Round Up
Overall
This is a fantastic little PC and definitely worth the TechteamGB approved award!
