AMD Zen Core Details Leaked – Genuine Competitor to Intel
|I’m not kidding when I say AMD’s new ‘Zen’ architecture could genuinely provide a competitor to Intel’s 1150 platform (or, dare I say it, 2011).
A few slides have supposedly been leaked from an official AMD presentation, showing that a few things we already know, as well as a few new tricks. It seems AMD have listened to, well, everyone, and completely re-designed the core – something that was much needed with the Bulldozer/piledriver core being the best they had. It looks like they are still focusing on multi-threading performance, but have implemented a new ‘High-bandwidth, low latency cache system’, which as you may or may not know, what what ruined the Bulldozer chips, with the shared L2 and L3 cache.
The core is supposedly going to be more energy efficient, with the aim to re-capture the server and enterprise markets – although I’m sure this will trickle through to the consumer too. Finally, the new CPU’s are supposedly available in 2016 (a bit vague, but it’s the best we’ve got. I’m guessing Q2 personally, as it’s long enough to build the hype train, and enough time to iron out the kinks to make it a perfect launch. That and Intel normally launches chips in Q2…).

Take a look at the core architecture above, and now the one below. Notice anything? The one above, as you can guess is the ‘leaked’ AMD slide with the ‘Zen’ core design. It now features only shared L3 cache, similar to the Intel 4790k design below. Just look at the middle portion of the Intel diagram – where you can see that it is basically just 4 cores which each have their own L1 and L2 cache, but also shared L3 cache – unlike Bulldozer which had shared L2 cache between 2 cores (the reason why in cinebench it would show up as 4C/8T 4 cores, 8 threads, even though it ‘was’ an 8 core).
For me this is quite interesting, and hopefully can help bring AMD some market share back from the jaws of Intel! Although in saying that, this is a very basic analysis and would likely need to be properly tested before any real opinions are made! Would you be interested in upgrading to a Zen core chip when it’s released?
