Massachusetts Is Fed Up
|22 rural towns in the state of Massachusetts are going to get gigabit fiber internet.

WiredWest’s goal is to provide high speed internet to the citizens of Massachusetts living in rural areas where internet access is poor or non existent. Currently there are 22 towns signed up with a goal of 32.
This colossal project is going to cost $79 million. 40% is going to be fronted by the Massachusetts state government. The towns have acquired $34.5 million in government bonds. By my calculation this still leaves $2.9 million unaccounted for, but that sum of money is not all that much and can be raised easily, when spread out over multiple towns.
To formally join WiredWest 40% of the households in your town have to pay a 49$ deposit so that you can “secure you spot”. When the residents of the town reach this threshold,WiredWest will provide them with super fast internet. Town councils will be required to cover some of the overall costs, possible some of the $2.9 million I mentioned above.
It is admirable that people are planning to provide a service like this in rural areas, as WiredWest are probably not going to make a profit from this endeavour. Currently these people rely on dial up (yes that’s still a thing) or satellite to access the internet, this technology will allow for 10Mb/s down on a good day.
WiredWest’s pricing is actually very competitive, 25Mb/s for $49, 100Mb/s for $79 and 1Gb/s for $109. All these prices are very similar to Google Fiber apart from with WiredWest you do not have to pay a $300 construction fee.
Do you live in a rural area and if so how do you access the internet?
