New Corsair Mice Review – Ironclaw RGB, Harpoon Wireless, M65 Elite
|Corsair have just launched 3 new gaming mice, which are all pretty different, but also almost exactly the same price, so I thought it’d be a great idea to show you them all together, and give you an idea of which style might be better for you.
The three new mice are the new wireless version of the Harpoon, an new one called Ironclaw – ironically a palm grip mouse…. And a new version of their pretty old M65 – now the M65 Elite RGB. All the mice have pretty much the same RGB elements, with some the main lighting difference being where they have their profile and DPI indicators – which I’ll cover in a sec.
So, lets run down each mouse, then I’ll give you a guide to which might be best for you. Let’s start with the headline mouse, the Ironclaw. This is a thicc boi. It’s big, even for my hands. It really moulds to your hands which is nice comfort wise, and has pretty grippy rubber sides – although for a mouse this big, unlike the razer naga trinity, doesn’t have a specific place to put your ring and pinkie fingers – although they didn’t exactly feel out of place.
It’s got two large, well supported and good feel side buttons, along with two large top DPI and profile switching buttons, which change the colours of the LEDs on the side of the mouse, to indicate profile, and change which LEDs are on to show DPI level. All of this can be controller in the Corsair iCUE software too, including DPI levels up to 18,000, and actions for the buttons too – same as the other two.
Size wise it’s massive. I’ve got fairly large hands and it barely fits me, airing on the side of too big. As i said it does quite nicely mould to your hand shape though, and is quite easy to hold, but here’s the thing. It’s ~100g. For something this size, it feels pretty weird to have it be that light. The plastics they’ve used don’t feel amazing, so it feels quite literally like it’s empty. You may like that, but it’s not for me.
Moving onto the M65 Elite – this is an upgraded version of their now almost 10 year old design. It’s now got the same sensor as the Ironclaw, the custom PixArt PMW3391, running upto 18,000 DPI with 1 DPI increments – which is actually pretty impressive. It’s still got it’s triple side button setup, with again well supported and good tactile feel switches, setup as two fairly small side buttons and one large ‘sniper’ button. For those unsure why you’d need a ‘sniper’ button, it’s to lower the DPI while you are aimed down sights so you can make smaller adjustments to your aim more accurately – although this is something a large number of games now have built in.
It’s still got it’s weights system at the bottom, 3 in total, weighing about 9G each ( screw + weight), so you can have it as low as ~100g up to ~ 120g. Even without weights, it’s not the lightest FPS mouse ever, but with it’s metal base and rough plastic sides, it’s pretty well constructed. The top is this glossy finish which makes it pretty smooth which I’m not so much a fan of, but gives it a rather nice look – especially in white with the silver braided cable.
And finally, switching the the Harpoon Wireless, this little guy is pretty cool. It’s rather small, so unless you either have rather small hands, or really like claw gripping mice, this isn’t for you. It’s got two small, and again well supported and tactile side buttons which I personally found a bit difficult to hit, but I think that’s mostly a thumb size issue.
The wireless tech here is the real show-piece, the new “Slipstream” tech still used 2.4GHz, but uses “Corsair’s Intelligent Frequency Shift” to manage which channel it uses even in congested airways. It’s apparently also good for up to 33ft, so a great living room wireless mouse. It aims to deliver “sub 1ms latency” which is impressive and has about 30 hours of battery life with the RGB on, of 45 hours with it off.
Slipstream also lets you used Bluetooth 4.2 as well, so if you don’t want to use the included USB receiver, or you forgot it when travelling, you can throw the switch on the bottom to bluetooth mode and use it for up to 60hrs on battery there too.
The sensor in this is the more standard PixArt PMW3325, which does up to 10,000 DPI, and as always tracks well with no issues.
So, now you’ve had a rundown of each, now we need to talk about who they are for and if they are worth the price tag of around £55 to £60 – and similar numbers in $. Gaming wise, the Ironclaw is aimed at FPS and MOBA gamers with big hands, and I think it does a good job for that. The 3391 sensor does a brilliant job in games, and while the feel of the mouse – and the weirdly empty feeling – isn’t for me, I can see it being great for the larger handed gamer.
The M65 elite, having the same sensor as the Ironclaw, is just as great for gaming. It’s much more FPS focused, and more fit for normal sized hands, and therefore is probably the one I’m the most comfortable on. It’s fairly grippy sides are great, the sniper button is in a great place, and overall it feels really quality. But knowing the SteelSeries Rival 310 is – at least currently – £15-£20 cheaper, and lighter, I’d personally head for that one. The weights system is nice for balancing the mouse for you, but it’s just a tad to heavy for me to really recommend.
The harpoon wireless is a bit easier to recommend. Got small hands? Buy this. Want a portable and versatile travel mouse for gaming on the go, get this. Want a living room gaming mouse that you can use with both your HTPC gaming system, and laptop, and whatever else? Get this. The only downside for me is the size really, since it just doesn’t fit my hand well. Other than that, it’s great.
