$260 1440p 165Hz Gaming Monitor
|The proper 1440p 144hz monitors from the likes of Asus, Acer or even Gigabyte now, are all upwards of £500/$500 making them rather inaccessible to a lot of people, even people who’s systems can handle it, so if you are stuck on 1080p and want that crispy goodness of 1440p AND high refresh rates, this Korean import monitor from “MBEST” could be the option for you!
I should make it clear for my non-USA viewers that this doesn’t directly ship to anywhere but the states, so if you really want this specific model, you’ll have to pay an importer to import one from the USA for you, which could easily add £50+ to the price tag.
So, what makes this monitor so special? Well, it’s on Ebay for $260, or around half of what you’d pay for an Asus MG278Q. But is it actually any good? Lets see.
Initial impressions of it are good, it’s got nice to the eye colours, an impressively thin and flush bezel, a nice looking stand, a vesa mount on the back and HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI inputs too. Not bad.
If, however, you make use of the only adjustment the monitor has to offer, a small amount of tilt, and look at it from basically anything other than straight on… Well then you start to see what you are paying for. This is TN, not IPS, and the viewing angles make that crystal clear. Surprisingly, the side to side viewing angles are actually pretty good, so as long as you are level with it, you shouldn’t have too many problems.
Colour accuracy wise, I wouldn’t really want to use this for anything colour sensitive, as it only reached 98% of the sRGB spectrum but volume. Not the worst I’ve tested, but not great.
In terms of response times, the actual panel itself had sub 5ms of black to white response time, and the total system input lag was between 33 and 38ms which is fairly good, and certainly decent enough as a gaming monitor.
And of course, speaking of gaming, it was pretty good. At 165hz in the “overdrive” option I regularly felt stuttering and other artifacts that made gameplay less than ideal, but at 144hz with “overdrive” off, it was rather smooth and pretty enjoyable.
Now of course we need to talk about the more local offering, the Element Gaming 1440p 144hz monitor. It’s a similar price in £ – £230 or so from Ebuyer, and is basically the same OEM style monitor with a sticker on the front. Really, they are equivalents, which means if you are in the USA and want a cheap 1440p 144hz freesync monitor, then go grab the MBEST. If you are in the UK, grab the Element Gaming.
So would I recommend this one? Generally, yes. It’s certainly a more budget option, doesn’t have all that many bells and whistles, but it’s functional enough that you can enjoy gaming and content consumption on it, and not overly expensive. Would I put one on my desk? I think I would. It’d generally prefer a nicer IPS model and ULMB, but if I didn’t have much to spend but I wanted 1440p 144hz, this is a good shout.
Is this Korean monitor from MBEST worth your $260, for a 1440p 144hz Freesync monitor? Let’s find out…
