This AOC AG273QCX might just have what it takes to claim the “best 1440p 144hz monitor” title. It’s a high spec, reasonably priced, killer gaming monitor and here’s why. First off, we have what really is the sweet spot for PC gaming right now – and yes, that means sorry to the current gen console players, you can’t make use of either the 1440p or 144hz aspects here. The rather nice 27 inch, 1440p, 144hz VA panel in here really stands out as a beautiful display to look at, and fast and responsive to game on too.

While it is VA, this monitor’s input lag was consistently lower than the – spec wise anyway – identical MSI offering, and even faster than a few TN panel monitors too, clocking in at a total system input lag of around 28ms. The panel is a little bit slower than some TN counterparts, as you are looking at somewhere around 7-8ms of black to white response time, but didn’t display any noticeable issues with ghosting to my eye.

Technically, this is an HDR capable monitor, but since it only has a peak brightness of 400 nits, and doesn’t have any local array dimming, I’d personally leave the HDR off. I mean, it looks good enough without it.

Since we are talking about how good it looks, we should mention colour accuracy, which certainly isn’t bad. You are looking at around 80% of the DCI P3 spectrum, and 114% of sRGB by volume too, which is plenty for light colour work, but not for a pro – although it isn’t meant to be.

What is pro is how much damn I/O this thing has. Seriously. You have 2 HDMI ports, 2 DisplayPorts, VGA???, 4 USB 3 ports and Mic in and audio out. That’s mad. It’s also brilliant because it means if you did want to use a console or two with it, even if you won’t see a benefit over a 1080p 60hz display, you can still use it with them. And that old PC that only has VGA, S-VIDEO and the somewhat proprietary DMS-59 display output you always get on old Dells.

Moving onto styling, it’s rather nice. It’s got thin, flush bezels, and of course, an RGB ring on the back you can control in the menu which is actually pretty easy to navigate thanks to the joystick on the bottom. The stand is nice, has a carrying handle up top, and while it sticks out pretty far backwards, offers a fair bit of adjustability in tilt, swivel and height adjust, making it nice and ergonomic for you.

Of course, we can’t talk about a gaming monitor without, well, gaming. It’s great. It’s smooth, responsive and a joy to game on. It also won’t tear either, because it supports Freesync 2, and works well with G-sync too, so no matter what you game on, you should love this monitor.

So it all sounds promising then, to take the crown of best 1440p 144hz monitor, until you remember it’s downfall, the competitor I mentioned earlier, the MSI MAG271CQR. That too, is a 1440p, 144hz, VA, Freesync, Curved monitor, but is selling for £100 less than this. The real saving grace for it is that the MSI one seems to be constantly out of stock or pretty hard to come by, so in it’s absence, the AOC AG273QCX is, almost, the best 1440p 144hz monitor around.

To answer the usual question, would I put this on my desk? The answer is yes, if I couldn’t get the MSI one. Both are great, and while the AOC one has lower input lag, the £100+ price difference really makes it hard to give this a perfect score. But it’s damn close.
