The “mesh” functionality comes in as you can purchase their mesh WiFi extenders, and set them all up seamlessly to fit any size house, and control them all from their app too.
The router itself is also easy to setup, just plug in the power and an ethernet connection from your modem, then download their app, let it scan the QR code and you are pretty much done. The app will also control how you want updates to work – including fully automatic, daily checks for updates.
If you sign into the app, it’ll let you connect to both Amazon’s Alexa, and your Google Assistant to control some functionality like parental controls, pausing internet access, and even rebooting the router, if you’d rather not do that through the app itself.
You can also use the app to enable guest WiFi, which lets you create a second WiFi network that’s separated from your home one so guests can still access the internet, but not any of your other devices connected.
You might have also noticed the “McAfee Protected” logo on the router, that’s done through the D-Link defend app, which lets you scan for vulnerabilities, set up parental controls including not only specific sites, but also categories like gambling or dating, and set a schedule for when the internet is active.
You can look through the connected devices and label them so you know which is which, and create profiles for your kids and assign devices to them so you don’t have to be blocked from anything, even if you have parental controls enabled.
The router’s security also makes use of McAfee’s Secure Home Platform that helps protect every device connected to the router, which includes a 2 year subscription worth around £180, and if that isn’t enough you can also get free McAfee LiveSafe for any devices you have.
