AMD Ryzen 3400G Review
|AMD has been on a roll recently, with their 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs smashing the competition. So, when you hear they’ve got a “3rd gen” APU out too, you would understandably be pretty excited. Sadly I’m here to be the buzzkill, and tell you that while this APU is NAMED as 3rd gen Ryzen, it’s actually a “Zen+” or 2nd gen Ryzen core design. I know, i know. Maybe next year.
Spec wise, you are looking at 4 cores, 8 threads, a base clock of 3.7GHz and boost of 4.2. It’s built in GPU is a Vega 11, meaning it’s got 11 compute units – to compare that to a Vega 56 which has, well, 56.
Now this all sounds promising, but how good is it, especially for around £140? Well, if you only want to spend 3-400 on your PC, and you need to buy new, it’s pretty awesome. It handles most games at 1080p low settings pretty well – here’s a look at some benchmarks for that.
Render Time (s) | ||
Premiere Pro | 1734 | |
Single | Multi | |
Cinebench | 414 | 1938 |
AVG | Min | |
APEX | 49.8 | 26 |
AVG | Min | |
PUBG | 35.51 | 25 |
AVG | Min | |
Fortnite | 85.7 | 63 |
AVG | 1% Lows | |
BFV | 30.98 | 24.44 |
When it comes to the CPU performance, it’s pretty much what you’d expect from a quad core, 2nd gen Ryzen CPU. Cinebench shows decent but not amazing single threaded performance, at 414 points in R20, with multithreaded being at 1938. Premiere Pro on CPU only rendering a 10 minute test clip is around half an hour, compared the 2700X at around 19 minutes.
Overall, this is a really impressive chip. While I still can’t wholeheartedly recommend it if you want a “proper” gaming PC, if you already have an AM4 motherboard for example, this could be a good drop in substitute while you get your main parts, or even as a living room gaming PC or HTPC as it does handle 4K playback pretty well.
To answer would I put this on my desk, the short answer is yes I think I would. While it wouldn’t replace my actual gaming PC, i think this could be a great DIY livingroom PC for streaming games, movies and tv shows.
