The best gaming headset ever?? Audio-technica ATH-G1WL
|For audiophiles, gaming headsets tend to be pretty naff, with generally cheap build quality, and, more importantly, have limited audio quality. So when you hear that Audiotechnica have a “gaming headset” that is, for all intents and purposes, a wireless (or wired) version of the ATH-M50’s with a microphone, you are likely jumping for joy.
Now the good news is the audio quality on these is absolutely phenomenal. Stick on some high bitrate FLAC files and enjoy the incredibly crisp audio, seriously. The bass on these is insane, it’s punchy but not overdone, and still has a great clarity to it, while still feeling it in your chest. The mids are great too, and the highs are incredibly clear and sharp. I really enjoyed listening to these a lot.
Now, you might be worried about the mic, but the good news is it’s removable, so even if you don’t like it, you could swap it out with anything you want. Either way, here’s a quick test of it.
So you’ve heard the mic, and know the audio quality is brilliant, so what about, well, everything else. Lets start with build quality. It’s pretty nice, it’s got a metal headband and nice quality plastics, along with a very nice blue aluminium ring on the sides. You’ve got a good amount of adjustability, as well as ear cups that rotate to sit nicely on your collar bones, which is great.
The ear cups are a mix of faux leather and fabric, which make for a breathable and comfortable feel, and honestly my personal preference. And the best thing, and something that I really wish more premium headsets did, is that they include an extra set of ear cups in the box, since those are the parts that are likely to wear most over time. Really nice to see that included.
Comfort wise, I think this is perfect. It doesn’t feel like it has all that much clamping pressure but sticks very well to your head, and honestly feels like it isn’t even there, so very nice for long gaming sessions. And speaking of long gaming sessions, Audiotechnica claim 15 hours of wireless battery life with these, which seems about right to me. It does charge with a micro USB port instead of a type C which is annoying, and doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack as an input, only wireless, so do keep that in mind.
So, are they the best gaming headset ever? Well, it’s certainly close. You get incredible audio quality, brilliant comfort and good build quality and battery life, and if you place it right, a decent enough microphone too. The main downside here is the price, as you are looking at around £230 for the wireless version, or around £180 for the wired model. Now of course, the “buy the m50s and slap a mod mic on the side) option would work pretty well, and be cheaper at least on the wired front, if you want wireless, this is probably the way to go.
With that said, would I put these on my desk, and replace my beloved Corsair Void Pro Wireless? Quite possibly. I really like these, so I think I will certainly be trying to switch them out and seeing how I get on, because man do these sound good.
