HP OMEN GTX 1650 Laptop Review
It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed an OMEN product, and it seems like a lot has changed. This is their GTX 1650, i5 9300H laptop, and it’s actually pretty impressive. Lets start with the performance.
In games, the 1650 does alright. I ran my benchmarks at ultra settings as normal, but you can always drop the settings a bit for higher FPS. Anyway, lets have a look at the results.
If you do drop the settings a bit, you’ll actually get to make use of the rather nice 144hz display – while gaming its pretty smooth and responsive. It’s generally a good experience, with colours actually being rather good too, with around 127% coverage of the sRGB spectrum. It’s not overly bright, I think 230 nitts brightness, but it’s enough for most usage.
While gaming, temps are pretty much what you expect from these mobile chips, the GPU actually stayed impressively cool at just 71°c, but the i5 is still up at it’s usual 92°c. What struck me though was how quiet it was while gaming, I really didn’t notice it while benchmarking, which is a stark change from the usual jet turbine I’m benchmarking.
Sadly though, I can’t show you the cooling itself as seems to be rather difficult to open, which also means it’s going to be difficult to upgrade or replace anything in the future, but for the price that isn’t the end of the world. You do only get 8GB of RAM though so content creation could be a bit limited on this.
The keyboard is fine, it’s a non-ISO layout with the short enter key which is an annoyance for a brit like me, but the keys themselves are pretty good. They’re a bit soft for my liking, but good nonetheless. The track pad is good too, with the physical buttons being a bit mushy but it’s fine.
And then there’s the IO, which is actually pretty good. You don’t have much on the sides with a USB port per side, DC in and headphone and microphone jacks and an SD card reader, with the rest being on the back, with gigabit ethernet, HDMI, mini displayport, USB C and another USB A port.
All-round then, it’s a pretty competent machine. It performs well, it’s a bit cheaper than the Acer Nitro 5 of the same spec, it’s enjoyable to game on so overall, yeah. Pretty good. Would I put one on my desk? Actually I think I would. I really don’t have too much to complain about here.
