Premium gaming keyboards often have a unique feature to help sell their astronomical price tags, but it’s kind of rare to have 2. This is the Steelseries Apex Pro and, much like the Wooting two, has adjustable actuation point switches, but unlike the wooting, also has an OLED screen that you can use to customise your settings on the fly. Let’s take a look at this.

Starting with the key switches, these are basically normal cherry style switches that have been adapted so they have a magnet at the bottom, and a sensor that can detect the distance the magnet is from it, to actuate the key press. It starts at just 0.4mm deep, but can be set down to 3.6mm if you prefer.

Typing on it set to “5” felt pretty normal, like any other cherry mx red keyboard, but setting it to “1” was pretty bad, as you might expect. A lot of accidental key presses there… And at “10” you really have to bottom the key out to actuate it.

The OLED screen i mentioned is actually similar to the Rival 700’s display, it basically lets you change your settings on the fly. It’s pretty nice to be able to adjust the actuation point between gaming and typing, although I’m not sure how often I’d actually use it myself.

It can also integrate with games like CS:GO to show you stuff like KD, round number, team wins and stuff like that, along with change your keyboard lighting to show how many bullets you have left – but there’s only a couple games that it can be used with, or even useful for, if any.

Otherwise, it’s a pretty normal keyboard, it’s got a USB passthrough with nicely labelled USB connectors, feet to raise it up on the back along with 3 options for cable routing and a magnetic wrist rest that’s rather nice quality, if way too low for me personally.

Is it worth the £200 price tag? Well that’s likely up to you. For me, the Wooting Two offers generally more functionality I’d actually use – up to four key presses per key, mode swap buttons to change actuation point and stuff as a top level button, and it’s £40 less, with fully swappable switches, should you decide to change your mind, but of course this Apex Pro isn’t a bad option either. It’s not for me, but I wouldn’t have the hardest time recommending it to anyone who was interested.
