Cheap, Tiny, Wireless, Mechanical Keyboard – Keychron K2
Mechanical keyboards normally tick a couple boxes when it comes to features, but it’s normally the usual, cheap, built well, feature rich, and pick 2 kinda deal, but this thing, the Keychron 2, it breaks that mold in a very stylish way. Let’s run you through what this tiny keyboard has to offer.
First off, it’s mechanical – it doesn’t use genuine cherry switches, but it uses one of the more reputable clones, gaterons, and comes in a variety of options for switch type, i have browns here since those are my preferred option. It also sounds brilliant too.
Of course, gaming on it is brilliant, with a nice feel to the keys it’s a comfortable and enjoyable experience to use. Same goes for typing too, it has a very satisfying feel to it. The key caps to help with that being nice quality.
Next, it’s a tiny board, but done really well. It’s still got full size arrow keys, home, end, and page up and down keys, delete and print screen too, and an F keys row mixed with a whole load of functions keys for media and lighting controls – which, of course it’s per key RGB with a load of modes. The only problem I have with the layout is that it’s non-ISO so as a brit it’s not what I’m used to, but honestly I could probably get used to it considering how nice it is otherwise.
Carrying on with the functionality tour, it’s also wireless with bluetooth, or can use the brilliantly designed USB C port and cable on the side – brilliant because the port is slightly recessed with the cable having a thick inset so when the cable is plugged in, it’s the plastic mold, not the connector, that would be taking any strain. Wireless wise, it’s great, you can use the number keys to switch between devices and has a full 4000mAh battery inside meaning it lasts what feels like forever on a single charge, even with RGB on.
Moving on, build quality is something you might think may be lacking here, but nope, it’s built like a tank. It has 0 deck flex, like literally nothing. Now it is a tad on the heavy side because of that, but still, it feels brilliant. Like I said the key caps are great, and the rest of the board is a great feel too.
So you’ve heard how brilliant it is in pretty much every aspect, so it must cost a fortune right? I mean it’s made by a small indie company and has all these features and build quality, so you wouldn’t be crazy to think it costs possibly hundreds of dollars, right? Well, if you are willing to go without RGB and just have white LEDs, it costs just $69 – nice – and with RGB, well that’s only $10 more at $79. That. Is. Insane.
So if I haven’t made it clear already, this keyboard gets a massive thumbs up from me. It’s brilliant in all regards I can see, so if you want a small mechanical keyboard get this one. Hands down. Would I put one on my desk? I’m not the tiny keyboard type but honestly this was a nice enough experience that I’d possibly consider it. Seriously.
