Improve your streaming setup – Elgato Key Light Review
|I’ve been streaming here on YouTube once a week for over a year now and the biggest problem I’ve had is lighting. I tried moving one of my main filming lights downstairs pre-stream, but man that’s annoying, and I know most aspiring streamers don’t have any to begin with, so I thought I’d take a look at these Elgato Key Lights and show you how much of a difference they can make.
So, first things first, why is lighting such a problem for me? Well, the stream looks… ok… but it’s pretty noisy despite being one of the better webcams on the market, the Logitech C922x, mostly thanks to only having the standard house lights on while streaming, and even then my office is kind of exceptional in terms of how many light fixtures is has with both wall lights, and a ceiling light too. But, thanks to the keylight, well, it actually looks decent.
Let’s start with what’s in the box, you get a comically large instruction card with all the instructions on how to set it up, mainly just download the elgato control centre app, the panel itself, a desk stand and a power adapter with every plug face around. The panel is pretty big too, it’s around the size of a 15” laptop display and comes with a diffuser as part of the panel face which is not removable, nor can you swap it for a different colour or gel, but since you can customise the colour temp on it anyway, it’s not exactly a big deal. It’s got 1 switch on the back along with DC in, a very nice pattern too, and has ¼” mounting screws on every side, including top and bottom for mounting in any orientation you need.
Setting up the keylight with it’s stand can be tricky, the stand is a desk clamp style with a rather wide handle, which means I couldn’t make the stand work for a single desk I have here, and doesn’t look like it can be unscrewed from the base easily to just screw the pole to the desk – although your mileage may vary there. I think I would rather have seen a tripod style stand, or even one with a detachable/swappable base so I could screw it to my desk rather than balance it back there.
Once it’s setup, it’s pretty easy to use. It integrates with the streamdeck really well, so much so that I’m going to use one of these panels upstairs and I put my streamdeck mini on my rendering PC so i can control the panel without an actual display connected.
You can control the brightness, as well as the colour temperature with a crazy wide range, from 2900K all the way to 7000K – and at a peak brightness of 2800 lumens. Compared to my main filming light panels it’s about the same brightness, maybe a little less bright, but has more colour temp range. The only thing to mention here is that you can buy 2 of my filming lights, and batteries since they don’t have to be plugged in for the price of one keylight.
The end result is pretty big though, i mean look how much better the stream looks by comparison. It’s night and day, pun intended. No matter how you go about it, having good lighting for your camera is pretty essential and if you are willing to pay a bit of a premium for good quality, customisable lights with great integration with the streamdeck – something a lot of streamers already own – then these could be for you.
