Desktop Replacement? – MSI GT76 DT Review
|I can’t say I truly understand the “desktop replacement” laptop market, since it seems to me that you could build an ITX PC with the same specs – and require the same number of plugs – for around half the price, but hey, I guess I’m not the target market.
With that said, the MSI GT76 DT is pretty beastly, and not just because it’s massive. Let’s start you off with some performance numbers.
Those performance numbers aren’t quite at the level of a comparable desktop – in fact it’s around 15% slower on average, but you can chalk that up to the reduced space for cooling and power delivery, so it’s not exactly too bad.
Speaking of cooling, this thing is kinda crazy for how loud it can get, and sometimes seemingly randomly too. Just when booting up it’ll run at like 75% fan speed. Here’s what it sounds like at 100%.
Temps wise, it does a decent job of keeping the DESKTOP 9900K cool, at 90°c, and 86°c on the GPU too, so not too bad there, and didn’t pass any heat through to the top side that I noticed so great job there.
The display that’s on my model is a 4k option, which while pretty nice to look at, and reasonably good colour accuracy, isn’t exactly the best gaming experience especially considering the hardware. Their spec sheet says they have a 1080p 240Hz option, but I can’t find one for sale here so if you are planning on getting one of these, I’d recommend you get the 240hz one instead.
Of course, gaming on it is pretty nice overall, like I said the 4K display doesn’t really fit this spec, and you’ll need headphones in but damn does it get good FPS. Sadly, you will need 2 plug sockets available next to you at all times, since not only does the laptop have a pretty abysmal battery life – just an hour of web browsing – it also comes with a dongle that you are required to use with it’s 2 power bricks in order to charge it.
And the final come-down here is the price, for this 9900K, RTX 2080, 64GB of RAM, 1TB of SSD space model, it’s around £4,500 – around double the price of a comparably spec’d desktop. While this is in line with competitors like the Alienware option, it still seems, well, alien to me that you’d want something this large, heavy and relatively un-portable, but like I said at the start, I’m not exactly the target market.
So, if you are in the market for a desktop replacement laptop with literal desktop hardware inside, great performance and don’t mind it being on the louder side, this seems like a great option. Now, is it for me? I think I’ve made that plenty clear in this video, no, but if it is for you, I’d love to know what your use case is in the comments below. Genuinely interested in hearing from people with desktop replacement style laptops on why.
