If you’ve watched any of my monitor reviews before, you’ve seen my use my Datacolor Spyder5 before, especially to see what out-of-the-box colours they can offer, but since Datacolor sent over their newer model, the SpyderX, I thought now would be a good time to explain why you might want one, what it does, and why, if you make videos, edit photos or even stuff like 3d model, why you need to calibrate your monitor. And as a quick note, this is not a sponsored video or anything, except for maybe the TechteamGB merch if you want a great hoodie or T-Shirt!

So, lets start with what it does. You can think of it like a camera, with it’s new lens design that parallel is nice and easy to draw. It’s software shows a colour on screen, then the sensor reads what colour it actually displays, repeat that for a number of colours and bam, you now know how far off your monitor is. Then, the software can create a profile to correct that colour difference, so what you see on screen is what colour everything “really” is.

Right, that’s what it is, now why would you want one? Well, if you edit photos, videos or even 3d model, your monitors can be pretty wildly inaccurate. Obviously it’s not going to be horrific, like you see blue when it should show red, but subtle differences in shades of colours mean if you are say editing a photo you are going to have printed, you’d want to make sure what you get printed is what you see on screen. The same goes for videos too.

So, why the SpyderX? Well, it’s cheaper than the now “old” Spyder 5, it’s just £110 right now for the Pro, or £169 for the Elite version which is actually the same hardware, just a software addition that lets you calibrate projectors too.

Next is how fast it is. It took a couple of minutes from start to finish to calibrate my AOC 24G2U and seemed to do a great job of it. For context, the Spyder 5 – using DisplayCAL i should add – takes a couple of hours to finish, so this is a very welcome addition.

And finally it’s easy of use. Seriously, this thing incredibly simple to use, just plug it in, hang it on your monitor, open the software, click next until it asks you to set the right brightness, then continue and let it flash some colours and that’s it. You can save profiles for each monitor and each run and it’ll even remind you in a month to re-calibrate the display again. Pretty handy.

So would I buy one, would I put one on my desk? Since I paid my own money for the Spyder 5 a few years ago, I think it’s obvious that yes, I would. How much faster this is, is amazing, and now that it’s cheaper than the Spyder 5s, I’m pretty happy recommending it.
