Look, if you want a cheap smart watch, this ain’t it. It’s got pro in the name, and just like the iPhone, that means it’s not budget. If you want a cheap smart watch, the Ticwatch S2 is where I’d head – go check out my review of that above.

So, what makes this “pro”? Well, first is the dual displays. Honestly this is a brilliant idea, basically there is the “usual” oled screen for when you want to use it as a full Wear OS smartwatch, and then on top of that is a transparent LCD that barely uses any power and lets it function just like a normal watch. There’s no backlighting to it, so you’ll have to wake the watch when it’s dark, but for most of the time it’s pretty easily visible. That display turns on by default as soon as the OLED turns off, although you can set it to stay in essential mode if you want around a month of battery life, at the cost of it not being a smart watch anymore, and requiring a restart to get it to be one again.

Next, Mobvoi – the company that makes Ticwatches – wanted me to mention it’s “powerful performance” which I found strange, since it’s the exact same chipset as both the much cheaper S2, and the previous “Pro” watch, with the only spec change being an extra 512mb of RAM bringing it to 1GB, so not sure what they mean there. I didn’t have any performance issues with it, which is nice, but I didn’t have many with the S2 either.

Then there is the 4G part. It’s got an eSIM built in, meaning if you have a compatible sim QR code to scan, you can use the smart watch exclusively, without needing to be tethered to a phone. I think you can even use it with “number sharing” so that if someone were to call you, it would go to your watch and your phone which is a new concept to me. The only downside is that there are next to no carriers that this works with – the only one in the UK is vodafone and I don’t use them, so I haven’t been able to test that functionality at all. They did say they are planning on adding more carriers, but no time frame was mentioned.

The rest of this is very, very similar to the S2. It’s got 24 hour heart rate monitoring, a decent fitness tracking and workout system, where you can tell it what activity you are going to do and it’ll do it’s best to track it for you, and will also track your step count and gives you “fitness goals” you try and hit. Also, since it’s a full Wear OS watch, you can download apps directly onto it, although of course the more you use it the less the battery life will have.

And, since we are talking about the battery, you can expect to get around 2 days with it in “smart” mode, and like i said around a month if you put it in essential mode. It’s pretty easy to charge, just like the S2 it has a magnetic charging dock, and charges pretty quickly, only a couple of hours for a full charge. It doesn’t seem to do any level of sleep tracking, so charging overnight is likely your best option.

One other thing that’s new is the proper IP68 rating, the S2 is waterproof up to 5ATM – so should be fine for everything including swimming, but now the Pro 4G has the proper IP rating, which is nice to see.

So, why would you spend your £250 on one of these, when you could spend around £100 less, get almost the same hardware and software, just with a plastic body instead of metal? Well, it comes down to the premium feel, dual displays and the 4G support. If you want a solid, potentially more durable watch that honestly works better as a watch thanks to the dual displays, and with the right carrier, can support an untethered experience, this could very well be worth it. While it is pricey by comparison, it’s still a pretty great deal for all the functionality. Personally, I would buy the S2 and save myself the £100, but since I have this already, it’s pretty much a no brainer to wear this one.
