Amazon’s Choice – £25 Gaming Headset – MPOW EG3 Pro
|A £25 gaming headset has to be terrible right? Like, Corsair’s HS35 costs £35 and that was pretty cheap. But, this MPOW EG3 is “Amazon’s Choice” for a gaming headset so in this video we are going to take a look and see if it’s worth buying or if this “Amazon’s Choice” is, well, a bad one. But first, if you aren’t already, consider subscribing for more videos like this every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
When a headset is this cheap, they have to cut corners, the only question is which corners do they cut and by how much. You’d be forgiven for thinking this would be flimsy cheap plastic all over, but much to my surprise, it’s not. It’s got a metal headband with metal wire holding the padded part on and looks reasonably sturdy. Thanks to it’s design, it doesn’t have much flex side to side so trying to wear it with only one ear cup on isn’t great, but overall comfort isn’t too bad.
It doesn’t really conform to the shape of my head since the ear cups have no movement to them, meaning the bottom of the ear cup doesn’t actually touch the bottom of my head, but still it’s not bad. It doesn’t feel like it’s crushing the top of my head, nor the sides as the clamping force is pretty decent. The ear cups are incredibly plush faux leather, like, seriously plush. They aid in comfort a lot actually.
You even get LED lighting when you plug the USB in – just white but still, impressive to see at this price point. Connector wise you get the USB which is just for the lighting power, then a 4 pole headphone jack for the audio – and a 4 pole to headphone and microphone jack adapter in the box.
So they are built reasonably well, considering the price, which must mean they had to sacrifice the audio experience massively, right?
And the good news doesn’t stop there, the sound quality from the “50mm drivers” really isn’t bad. Now, it’s terrible by audiophile standards of course, but it’s impressively clear. The highs are pretty muted overall, but as usual with cheaper audio gear, it’s bass is turned up a fair amount. You do get a little distortion on higher volumes, especially on the higher notes, but this really isn’t the worst I’ve heard.
For gaming, footsteps are still plenty clear, it sounds about as good as any other headset in game and it’s actually a stereo headset too so the distinction between left and right is easy to make in game, and like I said comfort wise it’s decent enough that I wouldn’t have too much trouble on long gaming sessions.
So, turns out “Amazon’s Choice” was a pretty good one. For £25 – or an astonishing $22 on Amazon.com – it’s well worth buying, especially if you don’t have the cash for a better pair of headphones, even the HS35s are a reasonable amount better for around £10 more.
