One of the questions I answer the most on our weekly livestream Q&A is, should I buy an RTX 2070 Super, or save the £150 and get an RX 5700XT? Well, in this video I’m going to benchmark these two Gigabyte Windforce cards, talk you through some of the differences, and hopefully leave you with a good idea of where to head for your next GPU purchase.

So, lets start off with the bit everyone loves, the benchmarks. I tested 4 games here, all at 1440p on high or ultra settings. The first is Battlefield V, which was running in DX12 mode but with DXR disabled, and on ultra settings. Next is COD Modern Warfare which again was pretty much max settings, with DXR disabled. Then there is PUBG which was run on ultra settings, and finally Fortnite which was run at epic settings. So, lets see the numbers.

For the sake of clarity, my test bench was a Ryzen 3900X with 16GB of 3600MHz RAM, and these are the driver versions I tested with. Speaking of drivers, I can already hear the angry smashing of the keys on your keyboards to wail about AMD’s “terrible drivers”. I’m planning on doing a lot more testing with their drivers and doing a full video on it, but suffice to say I had no issues. I actually, quite deliberately, gave it the worst chances possible too as I didn’t remove the Nvidia drivers, nor existing AMD drivers before installing the latest version. I did have the system restart itself once while I wasn’t looking, so I can’t tell you why but to contrast, using the 2070 super I had a bug where BFV would just black screen if it was running at 1080p, so neither are perfect.

What about power and temps? Well, I recorded the max clock speeds each got to, with the 2070 Super hitting 1875MHz and the 5700XT hitting 2019MHz. The max temps were 61°c for the 2070 and 63°c for the 5700XT – not much in it. Surprisingly, the 2070S actually drew more power too, at 219W reported in HWInfo, vs 202W for the 5700XT.

So, for over $100 more should you be looking at a 2070 Super or should you save your cash and get the 5700XT? Personally, I’d take the 5700XT hands down. Even if you do have the driver problems reported by some, the fix seems to be a simple DDU and reinstall, and for well matched performance but for, what, 1/5th less money, why would you not go for that?

Of course, there are rumours NVIDIA is launching RTX 3000 series cards soon, which could put a spanner in the works for AMD even more, but the rumours currently say they won’t be launching until computex in june – a good 3 or 4 months away, and that’s assuming they even launch them any time soon after that. You can wait, but as with all tech it’s generally better to buy what you want now and upgrade later if you need it.
