THE BEST CHEAP 1440p 144Hz GAMING MONITOR – AOC CQ27G2U Review
|I literally cannot believe how cheap this 1440p 144hz monitor is from AOC. It’s their new CQ27G2U and oh wow it’s amazing. Seriously, you don’t want to miss this one. But first, if you haven’t already, consider subscribing for more videos like this one every monday, wednesday and friday!
So let’s get it out of the way first. This monitor costs £280, and I’d assume basically the same in the USA and elsewhere. That is astonishing value, considering it’s proper 1440p, 144hz, with freesync. Now, it’s a VA panel, which may turn some away, but I’ve got good news, it’s a brilliant panel. The important one is the response time, as that’s going to affect how bad the ghosting in games is, this panel was somewhere around 7-8ms which while not the fastest, still definitely isn’t bad. Ghosting is present, but not much. It wasn’t something I could easily notice in games, even fast paced games like CS:GO it still wasn’t an issue for me.
What about input lag though? Well, that’s equally decent. Using my time sleuth, it read about 12ms which is pretty decent – the MSI 1440p 165Hz VA monitor I checked out recently – that costs £130 more – ran with 11ms of input lag so it’s pretty close.
Actually gaming on it was great, it felt smooth and responsive, while of course retaining the great crispness that 1440p monitors have. I actually really enjoyed my time with it, and considering it’s price I really can’t recommend it enough.
Where it gets more impressive is the colours – for a display this cheap it really wouldn’t be surprising to see pretty awful colours, but low and behold, using my Datacolor SpyderX it covers 99% of the sRGB spectrum, 86% of the AdobeRGB spectrum, and 90% of the DCI P3 spectrum, which while a couple of percent shy of the MSI MAG272CQR, is still very impressive regardless of price point, and means if you are a content creator, especially gaming creator, this could be a brilliant entry point into 1440p high refresh rate, while maintaining decent colours for your editing.
A quick tour around the rest of it then, its styled pretty nicely. It’s got a few red accents like under the front lip, and on the back too, but it’s pretty subtle so I’m a fan. The stand has all the adjustment you’d expect, a good amount of height adjustment, tilt and even swivel too which is great to see.
Inputs wise you have 2 HDMIs and a DisplayPort, along with a 4 port USB hub which includes a powered port for charging your phone – again a great addition. As mentioned in the MSI review too, if you are looking to get this for your console specifically, I can’t recommend it. Neither current gen consoles – as far as I know anyway – properly support 1440p, and even if they did, they definitely wouldn’t support high refresh rate, so I’d give this one a miss if that’s what you are after.
Otherwise though, this is an amazing monitor. It gives a great gaming experience, with good colours and an honestly pretty insane price. While I’m not a massive fan of curved monitors – and they do have a non-curved variant if you’d prefer that by the way – the value for money this offers, and even forgetting the price just straight up a brilliant experience, means I can do nothing but recommend this to literally anyone who wants a new PC gaming monitor. It really wasn’t that long ago that 1080p 144hz monitors cost this much, so I really am blown away.
