5.6GB/s GEN 4 NVME! Patriot Viper VP4100 Review
|Gen 4 SSDs are impressively fast, apparently none more so than this, the Patriot Viper VP4100 – a drive that, if you rub it just the right way, can eek out over 5.6GB/s in read performance, so lets take a look at it. But first, if you haven’t already, consider subscribing for more videos like this one every monday, wednesday and friday!
So how does the VP4100 manage to get almost a gig per second faster than the existing gen 4 drives, like the shiny Aorus one or the mammoth Sabrent drive? Well, it’s not from the controller, as that is the same Phison E16 that pretty much all gen 4 ssds currently use – which like i’ve mentioned before is just a derestricted E12 meaning many real world performance numbers aren’t actually much better.
It’s also not from better cooling, as the included, and stuck on well heatsink is absolutely tiny compared to the others, just look at the thickness difference there, kind of insane. Now remarkably, it actually keeps the drive cool fairly well. For shorter writes, it was only sitting at about 40°c, and only after writing almost the entire capacity of the drive to it did it get to 70°c, which isn’t even the 75 that it would start thermal throttling.
The performance seems to come from it’s rather massive SLC cache, which allows it to get closer to the Gen 4 bandwidth limitation than most. The downside? Well, doing my usual stress test duplicating files on the drive, testing simultaneous read and write performance, it performs great at around 1.4GB/s average, but once that cache fills, for me that was around 300GB or so of data written, the performance tanks. Its still faster than a SATA SSD at around 6-700MB/s, but its not the fastest. With that said, you dont often write 300GB of files at once to a 1TB SSD all at full speed, so its hardly a concern.
The rest of the synthetic benchmarks are the usual for a gen 4 drive. It’s fast at the top end, but pretty similar to gen 3 at the more real world level. Still, getting multiple gigabytes per second even in file duplication is nothing to scoff at.
The biggest downside to this drive though is its price. It’s £220 for the 1TB model here in the UK, which compared to the sabrent drive, albeit without its chonky heatsink is only £160. For that kind of price difference, its hard to recommend the vp4100, but by the time you watch this pricing may have changed so im going to leave links to all 3 in the description below for you to check out. Those are amazon affiliate links that’ll take you to your local amazon store where you can see all that!
So, if you are after a great gen 4 drive, and can find it on offer, this definitely isnt a bad shout. Its remarkably cool for its size, lightning fast and while the blue PCB isnt the best, the heatsink is pretty nice looking and blend into the shadows of your case well.
