Nearly 4 years ago, a much younger version of me proclaimed the AOC G2460PQU to be the best 144Hz 1080p gaming monitor around. Since then, AOC have made some changes, the world of monitors has moved on a touch, so AOC decided a new model was in order. This is it, the AOC G2590PX, a new and improved version of their already brilliant lineup.

So, what’s new here? Well the TN panel isn’t all that much different, it’s still a 1080p, 144hz, 1ms grey to grey response time panel that delivers true 144hz as seen by high speed capture of the UFO frame skipping test, and still has fairly decent side to side viewing angles as can be seen here, but when it comes to top and bottom viewing angles… Yeah best that I show you, then we forget about the ability to look at the display anything other than straight on…

Colour accuracy is decent, for a TN panel, with 91% of the sRGB gamut covered, but only 63% of the Adobe RGB gamut, and 65% of the DCI P3 spectrum. Not bad, but not brilliant. It’s a gaming display though so overall fine. Finally this model has Freesync support as standard – and before anyone moans in the comments, Freesync is adaptive sync, and I’ve tested it myself. It supports Freesync.

The stand is also pretty similar. It’s got 130mm of height adjust, about 20° of tilt – which you’ll need – 45° left and right of swivel and can be rotated to portrait mode if you’d like, although again because of those top and bottom viewing angles it’s not recommended. You do have the option of a VESA mount though, so if the stand isn’t for you, you’ve got that available to you.

In terms of I/O, it’s actually a little different. On this one you’ve got 2 HDMI ports – both 1.4 – one displayport 1.2 port, and a VGA port of those ancient systems or when you just can’t find an HDMI cable for that old laptop or whatever. What else is new is the USB hub, the old one had one, but this is now USB 3, and has all the ports on the back, outward facing, still with one charging port too which is great to see.

Gaming on this is still a joy. Playing some CSGO I was impressed with the fluidity, and response time, and of course if this is your first jump to 144Hz, it’s highly, highly recommended from me. It’s genuinely an amazing experience, and can give a competitive advantage especially in more fast paced, generally FPS style, games. For the price, this is a brilliant option, especially since on the budget side of things, AMDs RX 580 GPUs are incredible value and would work brilliantly with this thanks to the Freesync, meaning you get a smooth experience non-stop.

Conclusion time, the G2590PX – and it’s cheaper, less impressive stand based brother, the FX – are brilliant monitors. Despite the not so great viewing angles, at least from above or below, everything else on the monitor stands out as being an impressive gaming experience. It’s a joy to play on, and isn’t ludicrously expensive. It’s a tad pricer than some of the older offerings from Acer and Asus – but a good bit cheaper than a lot of the newer ones, making this a highly recommended option – especially if you’ve got an AMD GPU – although don’t worry too much if you don’t as it’s still a great experience.

Would I put this on my desk? I think it’s clear really, it’s a yes from me. I’d be more than happy to make use of this myself, and even if I had to purchase one, I’d be pretty happy with the value I’d be getting for my money, and I think you will be too.
