Summary:
- Purchased MSI Optix MAG272CQR for PC Gaming. It is a very high quality monitor with great color and a great price. I recommend it. At this price, I don’t feel so bad replacing the monitor in 2-3 years with an updated one.
- Hooking up the USB 3.0 A-B cable made registration on MSI website easy as it read the Serial Number for me.
- Monitor comes with a great manual and setup guide.
- I’m Using with Nvidia RTX 2080 TI Video Card, 10ft Ivanky DP cable, 10 ft A-B USB 3.0 cable since supplied 6 ft cables don’t reach to my PC.
- The Box is not too big or wide so easy to store away. Monitor is not heavy but still sturdy.
- I easily wall-mounted using Amazon Basics Premium Monitor Arm so cannot comment on stand.
- No dead pixels, no back-light bleed, no noticeable panel glow.
- Text looks great, is easy to read, especially with True Type on.
- 165 Hz is smooth. I normally game with a high monitor refresh rate and frame-rate capped at 60fps so can’t comment on the freesync or gsync compatibility. However, at 165 hz, 60 fps and vsync on adaptive, I never see any screen tearing.
- I love the 1500R Curve, feels very natural when viewing.
- Pixel Pitch is very sharp at 27” and 1440p resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio.
- VA Panel type is my favorite for PC Gaming and this panel is bright, clear, focused with vivid colors and superior contrast ratios, dark scenes look great with lots of detail. Best VA panel I’ve ever used. I love the wide-gamut color.
- Gaming OSD software is easy to use and a great convenience for adjustments since I like my monitor further away than my arms can reach.
- Mystic Light is cool, I like the breathing setting.
- HDCR is great for games and can easily be turned off for normal viewing if desired.
- VA Panel Ghosting: This is a pass. I do not notice any VA panel grey-grey ghosting or smearing while gaming on normal, fast, fastest response times (I like fastest setting). I own an Acer Z35 which I don’t use any more but it had noticeable ghosting and this monitor does not.
- Motion Blur: Pass. I do not notice any motion blur while gaming and do not need to enable the Anti-motion blur setting.
- I have a Spyder Calibrator; however, the wide-gamut aware ICC profile it created actually made the image and color worse & washed out so I do not use an ICC profile at all as the monitor has a great image as is.
- ‘Calibrize 2.0 free app’ shows contrast, brightness, gamma as good at 75 contrast, 60 brightness, and normal color and I do not have it save a profile.
- I don’t use the blue-light filter so can’t comment on this.
- Hope all this helps with your purchase decision.
Pros:
- I love the colors and the wide gamut. Colors are very pleasing.
- Great contrast and black levels (thanks to VA panel).
- 165 Hz refresh rate (very smooth motion in games where my GPU can push high fps).
- Freesync: no tearing when playing games (works with my NVIDIA GPU, but I had to use Display Port for it to work).
- Resolution: not too high to be too GPU demanding. Not to low. My previous 27" panel was 1080p and the pixels were too big and text didn't look as good. I think this resolution is perfect for this size. Note that you will still need a powerful GPU if you want 60+ fps in more demanding games.
- I haven't noticed any ghosting in games so far. I'm a casual gamer, play various genres including FPS and RPGs (first person, third person, isometric).
- Curve. This is my first curved monitor and I really like the effect. I feel like more of the screen is visible which is particularly nice for games. Others describe it as more immersive and I guess that's true. The benefits of curved screen may depend on how close you sit to the screen. In comparison, now when I use my 27" flat screen at work, it feels like that screen is convex and the edges move away from my field of vision.
- I don't see any serious black crush.
- Build quality is good, and design is not too gamey.
Cons:
- Response time is not the best (4ms GTG), but this is typical of VA panels. As I said above, I don't notice any ghosting in games, but do notice it when scrolling in web browser and similar applications, which is a bit annoying. But I knew this coming in because my previous panel was also a VA. But I much rather prefer the contrast and black level of VA panels and didn't want to get a TN or IPS. YMMV. (Note that I have been using the "Fast" response time setting and haven't tried other settings yet).
- The monitor is a bit pricey but seems to be in line with what other monitors with similar features cost.
Other:
- I read a review online that mentioned that the monitor has black crush. I'm not sure if they actually tested this or just said it because the monitor uses a VA panel and that's some well-known flaw of VA panels. I'm not an expert in this but all I can say is that I googled "black crush", downloaded some test images from forums and have noticed only small or even non-existent black crush in these tests.
- Color accuracy: some online reviews mention that the colors are not accurate out of the box but can be improved through calibration. I feel that this assessment is correct. Colors are probably not super accurate out of the box but I find them very pleasing and don't notice any overly saturated colors, maybe just a bit on the red. I did not attempt any calibration so far because I like the colors as they are.
Pros-
Good value
Impressive core image quality
Smooth 165Hz refresh rate with AMDFreeSync 2
Immersive, curved design
Includes USB-C
HDR Ready
2560 X 1440 QHD Resolution
Displays beautiful colors at the resolution as advertised. Looks and feels top quality and both arrived with 0 dead pixels. I did not have to adjust any settings out of the box but you can still adjust/calibrate to your viewing and gaming preference. I didn't notice any ghosting with either monitor. The MSI Optix MAG272CQR offers great image quality without any major adjustments.
If you’re in the market for a high-refresh 1440p gaming panel with strong colors and plenty of contrast, don’t want the GPU strain of a full 4K monitor, but do want something that’s a cut above the 1080p norm, this is a good choice.
Cons- As mentioned in other reviews online, this Optix screen only technically offers 8-bit color reproduction. It does include dithering, which essentially tries to replicate a deeper color palate by using software to break blocks into multiple shades of the available colors.
However, with a peak brightness of just 300cd/m2 and no local dimming capability, this isn’t a true HDR display. There will be a noticeable difference between this and something offering true HDR, but it will be dramatically less noticeable than a screen that doesn’t utilise dithering.
You’ll also need to ensure you have a graphics card that can drive your games at up to 165fps in order to truly get the most from this screen.

The first thing that stands out about this monitor is its impressive resolution and refresh rate. With a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a refresh rate of 165Hz, everything looks incredibly crisp and fluid. Whether I'm playing fast-paced action games or slower, more immersive titles, the visuals are always stunning.
The monitor's 1500R curvature also adds to the immersive experience, making me feel like I'm right in the middle of the action. The curvature also helps to reduce eye strain and fatigue, which is especially important for me since I spend hours at a time gaming.
Another standout feature of this monitor is its 1ms response time. This means that there is virtually no lag or ghosting, even during the most intense gaming moments. The monitor also supports AMD FreeSync, which helps to eliminate screen tearing and stuttering, ensuring that my gameplay is always smooth and responsive.
The monitor's HDR-ready display also provides a wider range of colors and brighter, more vivid visuals. Whether I'm playing a brightly-colored platformer or a dark and moody horror game, the colors always look fantastic.
In terms of adjustability, the monitor is highly versatile. It can be adjusted for height and tilt, making it easy to find the perfect viewing angle. The monitor also features a variety of input options, including HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB, allowing me to connect all of my gaming devices without any hassle.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with my purchase of the MSI 27” QHD Non-Glare HDR Ready Curved Gaming Monitor (OPTIX MAG272CQR). Its combination of impressive resolution, refresh rate, curvature, response time, and color range make it an excellent choice for any gamer looking to elevate their gaming experience. I highly recommend this monitor to anyone who values high-quality visuals and smooth gameplay.
The HDR mode is iffy it does look good when watching movies but is not so hot when playing games or doing anything else so I rarely use it.
Honestly after having this one and the 32" I can say I would have preferred two of these instead of this one and the 32".
As for panel quality, I haven't owned it long enough for any flaws to come through. It had no dead pixels on arrival. So I count myself lucky for that. I will definitely update if anything goes sour.
The picture is crisp and smooth, as you'd expect from a monitor with these resolution and refresh rate specs.
Physical build quality is excellent.
Brightness / contrast / color temperature settings weren't to my liking right out of the box, but it's easily enough adjustable through the OSD.
The viewing angle claims are, as usual, rather.... optimistic. While shapes are still generally visible, there is still some color and contrast shift, but you probably won't get better without paying more.
Also, refresh rate specifications aside, this is still a VA panel. There is noticeable ghosting using the UFO test. That being said, the silicon lottery strikes again. The first monitor I received had ghosting with overdrive set to normal, an equal amount of reverse ghosting with the overdrive set to fast (default) and a ton of reverse ghosting when set to fastest. The replacement monitor, however, showed a reduction of ghosting with each increase in overdrive settings, and has barely any visible ghosting or reverse ghosting even with a worst case black text on white background situation.
The first display I received had a slight drop in brightness through the bottom inch or so of the display. The replacement unit sent by Amazon suffers the same flaw, albeit to a lesser degree, so, perhaps this is an issue with the lineup as a whole?
What definitely is a problem with this model is the backlight bleed. Rtings is the only review that I've seen mention it, but this monitor has a distinctive pattern of backlight bleed, with 4 "lobes" along both the top and bottom of the screen. Both samples I received had this, and the shape matched the bleeding in the RTings review perfectly.
That being said..... as expensive as this monitor is, it's still just entry level for 1440p high refresh so, compromises will have to be made.
