A few months ago, Philips and AOC flew me to Madrid to check out their new monitors, including this, the Philips Momentum 32 inch 4K display – something they claim is a console gamer’s dream – but is it?

Well, let’s run you through it. First, it’s a 32 inch, 4K, MVA panel. It’s only the lowly 60hz, since that’s all consoles currently support, but does feature AdaptiveSync, although only down to 40hz. For those of us rocking a gaming PC, both NVIDIA and AMD GPUs work with AdaptiveSync now too, which is great if you are planning on picking one of these up too.

Inputs wise, you’ve got 1 DisplayPort and 3 HDMI 2.0 ports – which I think is the right combination. It means you can have both your consoles and your gaming pc all hooked up and still have a port spare. You do have a USB 3 hub here too, and audio in and out as well which is nice to see, plus 2 5W speakers which are, alright, but likely worth using your own.

So what’s it like to use then? Well, gaming was nice enough, 60hz is always a little bit jittery for me, but I still had a good time, and it’s always nice to have the 4k sharpness too,

Input lag wise, you are looking at 67ms of total system input lag, which is actually a good bit slower than most of the other VA and TN monitors I’ve looked at recently, as they were around the 45ms mark. The panel response time they claim 4ms grey to grey, which seems to be about right, maybe a little more like 5-10ms on black to white response time.

Colour accuracy is something they seem quite focused on here, which is a little strange, as it comes pre-calibrated from the factory, and supports an impressive 90%+ of the DCI P3 spectrum. You do also have DisplayHDR600 certification, meaning you are looking at 600 nits peak brightness. It is a VA panel, but I couldn’t see much ghosting or really any major display issues.

Now we have to talk about the bit everyone hates, the price. This isn’t the cheapest 4K monitor, with a £600 price tag. Now, considering just how colour accurate it is, coupled with it’s reasonably low input lag, that isn’t horrific, but it is pretty odd. Considering you can get IPS monitors from the likes of LG with similar colour accuracy, and with input lag numbers that are pretty close to this too, for £200 less, it does beg the question, why get this one?

The only answer I’ve got here is that if you are a creative professional who likes to game in their spare time, console or otherwise, this could be a good shout, but for just console gaming – or even PC gaming – it doesn’t make too much sense. It’s a beautiful display, but in a strange place in the market. Would I put this on my desk? Personally, I’m not a big fan of 4K 60hz, and price is a bit of a turn-off, so probably not, but if you need a colour accurate display that is also pretty nice to game on, definitely take a look at this one.
