Objectively, this monitor is truly amazing. 1440p at 240Hz is definitely unique, and the panel is incredibly fast, but yet I can’t seem to bring myself to like it. Let me explain why, but first, if you haven’t already, consider subscribing for more videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday!

This is AOC’s AG273QZ, a 27 inch, 1440p, 240Hz monster that surprisingly doesn’t cost the earth. It’s actually cheaper than the Aorus FI27Q-P, believe it or not. For your money, you get one of the fastest TN panels I’ve seen, and buttery, buttery smooth gameplay. Ghosting is non-existent, and as long as you are sitting perfectly square on the colours are good too.

Lets start with some test results first so you can see what I’m talking about. First up, response time. I normally look at black to white response time, which for this panel is somewhere around 2-3ms, with overdrive set to medium. There wasn’t any overshoot with it on medium, and it’s plenty fast so no problems there. It’s also only 2ms going from white to black, which is pretty rare.

Taking a look at the UFO Test, you can see with overdrive set to maximum, there is a little bit of inverse ghosting, or overshoot, behind the UFO. Like I said that goes away with overdrive on medium, but still you can see just how clear and fast this panel is.

Input lag was pretty awful though, with my time sleuth reporting a whopping 12ms at the top of the display – contrast that to the Acer model I had in a few weeks ago with just 1.8ms at the top, it’s a stark difference. What makes it worse is that is with the “reduce input lag” setting turned ON! Turn it off and you see 16ms at the top. Not good. I thought that it could be the refresh rate and resolution though, seeing as the time sleuth will only do 1080p 60Hz, so I measured total system input lag too, from a mouse click to a gun firing in game, and that took between 30 and 35ms, which again isn’t brilliant. AOC’s own 1080p 144Hz IPS monitor, the 24G2U took about 20ms here, so 50-75% slower.

So, objectively, minus the input lag, it’s an incredibly impressive bit of kit. But subjectively, I’m not sold. Gaming on it was great. It felt smooth, pretty responsive and I was performing better than I normally would in CSGO, which is to say I actually hit some enemies rather than whiffing every shot. But, I’m not sure I can say I noticed any difference playing on this than I do on any of the other countless high refresh rate 1440p displays, including the FI27Q-P. It doesn’t feel like a night and day difference over the 144Hz and 165Hz counterparts, while sacrificing quite a lot of real world usability in the process.

The main thing you lose is viewing angles. Side to side isn’t horrendous, it has a yellow shift on the blue windows background, but it’s not unusable. What is though is vertical, especially from below. Any more than 5 of 10 degrees off centre and you get horrific inversion. It’s really not a good look, and means you’ll need to make good use of the included stand’s reasonable adjustability. You’ve got some tilt, as well as swivel, height adjust, and somewhat surprisingly rotation to portrait mode, something I cannot recommend you ever use.

The other thing you lose is colour accuracy. When I tested the panel with my SpyderX, it did report great results, over 100% of the sRGB spectrum in fact, but it had a complete night and day shift in colours just to get even remotely accurate, and even then it still was visibly off. You probably won’t want to use this for anything colour sensitive, unlike the other VA and IPS options available.

The thing I don’t really understand with this, is that besides the wow-factor of having 240Hz at 1440p, I’m not sure I see who this is for. It’s not for truly competitive gamers, they would buy a 1080p 240Hz display so they can guarantee they’ll actually hit that FPS in any game, or the new 360Hz displays that are coming soon. And for the semi-competitive gamer, why bother with 240Hz at 1440p when a 165Hz monitor is a much nicer, and potentially cheaper, option?
