MSI Z97 Nightblade Review

Hands down, this is the perfect LAN rig. With its awesome and sturdy handle, and masses of room for a full size GPU, this is my choice for a movable/mobile gaming machine (if I’m not using one of MSI’s GS60s…). Want it? (UK) http://amzn.to/1D2GNUw (USA) http://amzn.to/1NeaTWs

So I guess I’ll start with the spec. This thing comes with MSI Z97I Gaming AC ITX motherboard at its heart, which has a full 1150 socket, two full size DDR3 slots and a 16X PCI-E slot. The alignment inside the case (as you’ll see later) allows for cards such as MSI’s GTX980 Gaming 4G to be thrown in there with no problems! You’ll also get a 600W non-modular PSU which you can hunt through the layers of screws and metal to remove if you really want to. Although, saying that, you’ll probably never need to switch it since it has connectors for everything you can fit in here!

You’ll also get a slot loading optical drive, which sits above the 3.5″ hard drive slot (which is above the PSU). I don’t overly see a point to that being there, since physical media is pretty much dead and it’s only a matter of time until its just a USB 3.1 C memory stick with a 4K film on it anyway, but at least they included one and not just left the slot on the front!

The case itself it pretty small. It comes in at roughly 16x12x7 inches – that includes the handle/foot at the front, and the feet/screw things at the back! I mentioned a the top of the page that this is the perfect LAN rig, and I wasn’t kidding. The small form factor means you can take it places easily, the side pannel can be increadilby easily locked with a small padlock, that large aluminum foot at the front happens to double as the strongest handle ever (and if you buy one, you’ll get a soft gel wrap you can throw in to make it easier to carry). Seriously, this fits a 980 – bear in mind a 980 is 12 inches long, meaning this is pretty much as long as the card! I don’t know too many barebones systems that can fit this much stuff in them and still look so cool!

Speaking of looks, on the left side panel, you’ll not only find the 120mm optional fan mount, but a cool dragon which you have to be looking at from the right direction to see. I just imagine being at a lan and owning people and they look up and just see that dragon staring at them… Too cool. Ha! Anyway…

On the right side panel, there is a dust filtered intake for the PSU fan which can be removed and cleaned, should you want to. The bottom holds another dust filter which covers the front intake slightly, as well as the large meshed space where the GPU’s fans will be sucking large volumes of air into. This filter is removed between the handle and the bottom, so you don’t need to lift it up or anything – just slide it out! On the back, you’ll not only find two easy-lock sliders to lock or unlock the left (most used) side panel, but also screws for the right and top side panels. The screws for the top panel also double as case feet in case you decide to put this on its back for any reason – which is pretty cool! I like that you can take all the panels off, as it gives very easy access to the small space, and makes it easier (still not overly easy) to build in such as small space.

On the front you’ll find the hole for the slot loading optical drive, a bit of a mesh which lights up when the OC button is pressed, a sliver brushed aluminum plate, an MSI dragon (and another normal) logo, and the front I/O. That is comprised of two USB2 ports, two USB3 ports which strangely aren’t differentiated at all besides a small text difference above them (would like to see blue connectors here or at least a more clear marker for which is which), a headphone jack and a microphone jack, the OC button, Wifi and HDD activity LEDs and the power button which glows white when on.

To take a look at the back, you’ll find the kettle lead pass through for the PSU, full 7.1 audio, four USB3s, 4 USB2s (the images have some overlap, the two black USB ports and HDMI port are duplicate, there are one set of those), two ESATA for some reason…, two HDMI ports and a full size Display Port, SPDIF, PS/2 Keyboard & mouse combo port, clear CMOS button and two wifi antenna connectors (the antennas come in the box). You’ll also get two full size PCI holes for that full size graphics card I mentioned earlier.
