FreshTech R9 390 System Review

FreshTech Solutions are a cool British based company who build custom built PCs – and this one is pretty cool! Watch our review to see how well this system performs at both 1080p and 4K!

So, let’s get to it. This FreshTech Solutions PC is housed inside an InWin 703 Gaming case, and interesting choice – but man does it look good! With a big bludging window and stylsih red an black accents, it looks amazing – especially with the red LED fan and red LED light strip hidden inside!

FreshTech R9 390 System Review.00_00_50_26.Still003The top of this case is a little strange. You get the normal I/O, including 1 USB 3 port, 2 USB 2 ports, headphone and microphone jacks, power button with blue LED and HDD activity LED, but the power button is on the side that is normally pressed against the wall.. Strange choice InWin.

Anyway, on the back of the case you’ll get the rather bland I/O shield, along with the I/O from a rather value Gigabyte board, including PS/2 Mouse and Keyboard ports (yes, both independently), Serial…, HDMI, 4 USB2, 2 USB3, Gigabit Ethernet and 3 audio jacks. Further down you’ll find the 2 DVI-D ports, HDMI port and Full Size DisplayPort, along with the Bluetooth and WiFi antenna connectors (you get the antenna in the motherboard’s box). Something I’d like to note here is that FreshTech did an amazing job of packing this. They put the PC in the InWin box, then put that in a FreshTech box, with loads of soft-cell foam and the motherboard box, complete with WiFi antennas, manuals, and the power cable too – very nice.

Inside you’ll find the Intel i7-4790K with stock cooler, 8GB in a single DIMM, of Corsair Vengeance pro 2400MHz RAM, an XFX R9 390, an XFX 850W TS series PSU, a Kingston V300 120GB SSD and a 1TB Seagate HDD. Oh and a DVD drive, presumably because it fits with the case…

While not the part we are focusing on, I’ll just leave this picture here since this RAM is damn sexy.

FreshTech R9 390 System Review.00_03_06_00.Still008This, however, is the part we are focusing on. The XFX R9 390. With 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, a core clock of 1015Mhz and a memeory clock of 6000MHz effective, this thing has it down on paper. With it’s two fan design, and a heck of a lot of copper and aluminium, and all 2560 Stream Processors, it’s pretty beastly (in more ways that one). FreshTech R9 390 System Review.00_03_19_12.Still009

The card itself is huge, and not just in length, but extending over an inch past the rear PCI slot covers, it is huge. A really nice – if not the nicest – feature, is the backplate. The extruded XFX logo and the hexagonal holes to add style and breathing room make this a very stylish card to look at inside a PC. FreshTech R9 390 System Review.00_03_42_24.Still010

One thing I would like to point out, while not directly related to the system as you’ll probably never need to touch the card, is that due to the heatsink extending over the PCI power connectors (the 8 and 6 pin ones that power the card), if you even need to remove them, brace yourself for having the back of your finger removed, as the aluminium fins will slice you up as you try and unhook the connectors! I would love to have seen a cut out here!FreshTech R9 390 System Review.00_04_35_20.Still011

So anyway, back to the system. It looks amazing. It performs pretty well too, see our table below for specific figures, but even at 4K, most games were still playable even at medium settings, and at 1080p this thing blows it out of the water, reaching over 120FPS in Bioshock infinite on Ultra settings!

So, onto the down sides. This thing (gpu mostly, although the stock Intel heatsink doesn’t help) gets hot. The 4790K hit 75 degrees C while gaming, and the 390 maxed out at over 90! The card averaged 85 degrees while gaming, and god was it loud. This card, combined with the stock Intel heatsink made it ridiculously loud, as if a train was passing by constantly.. But, that certainly isn’t FreshTech’s fault! If you did grab this PC from them, which you can do via the link below, I’d suggest asking them to throw on a Cooler Master Hyper 212 on their, to at least keep the CPU cool. Other than that though, that’s pretty much it. If you have any questions regarding the system, FreshTech or anything else, leave them in the comments and we will get back to you as soon as we can! Thanks for reading and we will see you again soon for another awesome review!
