Zotac GTX970 AMP! Extreme Core Edition Review

Zotac’s new GTX970 Extreme Core Edition has all the features you’d expect, and the style to boot – read now to find out how well it runs, even at 4K!

Zotac GTX970 Core Edition Review.00_02_46_19.Still002This card confuses me, because I’m not sure where it fits. Zotac has the AMP! Extreme and the AMP! Omega cards, and now this. This is an amazing card. It looks great, it’s cool (temps), great performance, and surprisingly quiet too, but (at the time of writing) it costs more than the beefier AMP! Extreme card, and doesn’t have the extra cool power phases on the back, or the OC+ Port! But anyway, lets get started!

So, this massive (over 12 Inch) card features an awesome triple fan cooler, which happens to overhang the PCB by a few centimeters. The three 90mm fans are actually really quiet, and keep the card very cool, even under load of 4K gaming!

Zotac GTX970 Core Edition Review.00_01_20_26.Still005Checking out the back, you’ll see the big overhang, as well as the cool matte backplate – with it’s many diagonal slots for some heat dissipation and general style. Again, nice design and a nice touch.

Checking out the side, you’ll find the carbon fiber accents, the white LED ZOTAC logo, and the two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors, which show off how power efficient this awesome GPU is! I’ll round off the design overview with my thought which is that this looks awesome. It fits really well with any gaming-styled case, and it’s rather neutral grey/black colour scheme makes it a perfect match for almost any system.

I specifically said ‘design overview’ as we still need a to cover a few things, including the above – the I/O. As with almost all Nvidia 900 series cards, you’ll get a DVI-I port, three full size DisplayPorts and a single HDMI port. Since I’ve began using high end PC’s (around 4-5 years), I’ve always advocated people use DisplayPort (over at worst DVI), as HDMI has always given me trouble, plus you are much more likely to buy an HDMI cable that’s stupidly bad, and due to fail.

To clear it up, we used medium settings for all our 4K testing, and high/ultra settings for 1080p – so yeah, it’s an awesome card – it hits over 60FPS in Bioshock, BF4 and Grid 2! That’s pretty freaking awesome. And of course, at 1080p, it smashes many cards out of the park! Now you see why this card gets the Gamer Approved Award – it’s definitely worth your cash if you are looking for a new high end, kick-ass GPU!
