MSI PE60 Laptop Review

Today Andrew takes a look at the more designer oriented PE60 laptop from MSI. Pretty sweet, with a few issues.

Lets start with the styling. It’s pretty sleek. Compared to the GS/GE ranges, it’s a lot more subtle,  the sort of look you could take into a board room – and a LAN hall.

On the right we have a DC power in, SD card reader, USB 2 port and…. yes… a DVD drive. I’m not even going to talk about it. Nope. Left is a lot better, with headphone and microphone jacks, 2 USB3 ports, MiniDisplayPort, HDMI, a charging USB3 port, Gigabit Ethernet and a kensington lock slot. On the back you’ll find a very nice Prestige logo and line, connecting the two vents for the dual fan design – a nice touch.

The keyboard and trackpad really aren’t my favourite. The keyboard seems to be a tad worse to type on, and is STILL THE DAMN USA LAYOUT! The trackpad isn’t much better, with physical buttons that seem to miss clicks regularly, a less-than-great surface and an implementation of gestures such as two-finger scroll that leaves a lot to be desired.

Saying that, the laptop’s single most redeeming feature is by far it’s lovely 15.6″ IPS 1080p screen. There are some amazing colours to be had here, with a colour temp button next to the power button, which lets you switch from gaming, low blue light, sRGB, designer, office and movie. I personally prefer sRGB as it has the best colours, and just looks amazing. You’ll also get some excellent viewing angles too.

Oh and once again, the front-bottom speakers are… facing the wrong head. They are pretty good though, as long as you are on a hard surface, otherwise the bottom mounted sub just dissipates bass and sounds tinny and horrid.

So that’s pretty much it. It’s a great laptop if you are a graphic designer, video editor or general content creator – but don’t need to game 24/7. If you are a gamer, go with the GE62 – very similar system, just with more applicable things like better keyboard. Oh yeah, remember – don’t by one without an SSD!
