The £2000 4K 144Hz IPS Monitor…

For the last few years, 4K has become a good bit more accessible to more, both in the monitor department with a number of them at or under £300 these days, and in the GPU department (although to a much lesser degree). There’s been one major problem that people have had though, and that’s the 60Hz refresh rate. The sheer amount of data you need to push through a cable is insane, along with the lack of panels and scalers that could handle that.

Those issues seem to have been overcome though, and finally, literally 2 years later, I have it in my hands. A 4K, 144Hz monitor. And my god is it amazing.

Asus have named this beast the PG27UQ, and it really ticks every box on a list of “best possible monitor features”, seriously. So it’s 4K, and 144Hz, but it’s also an IPS panel meaning great viewing angles, like, really good viewing angles, both side to side as you can see here, and top and bottom too, it’s crazy good. It also has a grey to grey response time of just 4ms – which while a pro CSGO player might scoff at, for us normies, that’s more than fine. It’s also got Gsync so inevitably when your GPU can’t deliver the full 144 frames per second you’ll want, your experience is still smooth and enjoyable. Finally it also has HDR support too for films and supported games, which is a nice enough addition.

This monitor doesn’t shy away from being flashy either, with the usual “light in motion” underglow, which I actually kinda like, but can be turned off in the menu, like the rest of the lighting actually. You then have the Aura RGB elements on the back which are actually a bit muted through semi-transparent plastic and again I kind of like. These lights can also sync with your Asus motherboard, GPU and peripherals too if you have them. And finally, the completely over the top addition to this, the “ROG Signal” – as in bat signal. Yeah. It’s got a projector in the top of the stand to project the ROG logo onto your ceiling, because why not.

Enough about lighting, lets talk about gaming. Setting this to 144hz was a bit of an unreal experience, but once done I was gobsmacked at the experience. So crisp, AND so smooth. I was playing CS:GO since it was a game I knew even an RTX 2080ti will run at above 144FPS. It’s also a great game for making use of the higher refresh rates – and I cannot recommend it enough. The gameplay experience here was jaw dropping, with great fluidity in motion, and precise detail on everything, just incredible.

The problem here is that me recommending this is that it’s like me recommending everyone to own a Ferrari, it’s just not feasible for most. The price tag on this monitor is as equally crazy as the experience using it, at a little over £2000 and about the same in $ too. This monitor is for the 1%, especially since the system you’ll need to really drive it is likely around £3000, if not more.

So, conclusion time, if you’ve got £5000 to burn and you want an incredible gaming experience on the handful of games you’ll be able to run at a good FPS, then this monster is for you. For the rest of us though, it’s likely a pipe dream. Would I put this on my desk? If I had £2k just for a monitor, definitely. If I had to spend my own money, then it’s a no from me. I like my PG279Q just fine for now, and my GTX 1080 can’t handle 4K, let alone high refresh rates so I’m happy for now.
