You’ve likely heard myself and many other tech creators talking about a monitors’ refresh rate, but if you aren’t too clear on what that is, what it means and what the differences are, this video will help.

Let’s start off with a definition. A refresh rate, normally measured in Hz (as in the number of times per second) is the number of individual frames your display will show in 1 second.

Most normal displays are 60Hz, meaning that the monitor will draw 60 separate frames in a second. Now, some of these frames may be identical, or may only get half way drawn, or a number of other issues, but that’s a topic for another tech explained video. Let’s just pretend that it all works fine, in that case a 60Hz refresh rate means every 16.7 milliseconds, a new frame gets drawn on screen.

Now, some displays have different refresh rates. Most good gaming displays are known as “high refresh rate” as they are above the ‘standard’ 60Hz. The most common “High refresh rate” is 144Hz. Higher refresh rates give a smoother look to the content – normally a video game – and can mean you see changes on screen ever so slightly quicker than on a 60hz display, ie an enemy coming round a corner, you’ll see them 1 frame quicker than a 60Hz display.

The highest commercially available refresh rate monitors top out at 240Hz. These are really only designed for professional gamers with incredibly fast reaction times. For the majority of us, me included, 144hz is all we need.

No matter the refresh rate though, every display – currently – updates the image on screen a given number of times per second, and generally, the higher that number is, the smoother and more responsive the experience feels.
