So you want a new gaming card in the sub £300/$300 range, but not sure what to get? Well, NVIDIA has just made this space really, really interesting. As of last week, they’ve launched 2 new cards, the GTX 1660 and GTX 1660TI, both sub £/$300, and both really rather good.

For a while now, if you had this sort of budget for a GPU, the RX 580 was a no brainer. Great performance, great price. Now though, it’s not that simple. Let’s give you a quick rundown of the specs of the new cards, then jump into the performance results.

Lets start with the 1660 since it’s the newest, it’s got 1408 CUDA cores, and can boost up to 1785MHz – although AIB cards may have higher offerings – and has 6GB of VRAM. The TI version has a few more CUDA cores at 1536, with a slightly lower boost clock of 1708MHz. Still got 6GB of VRAM though although it has GDDR6 over the non TI’s GDDR5.

So, performance then. Let’s take a look, and compare it to the old value king, the RX 580.

And finally, lets talk about price. Now this varies depending on when and where you watch this, so use the links in the description to find out pricing for you, but right now, in the UK, the RX 580 is generally about £10-20 cheaper than the 1660, at around £200-210. You can pick up a 1660TI for a bit more,  at around £260, but of course you do get a decent bit more performance.

So if you have, say £200-250 to buy a GPU for gaming, it looks like the 1660 is the new value king. Of course, if you have under £200, the RX 570 is still the best choice until we see lower end GTX offerings, but otherwise it seems to be NVIDIA’s game for now. The 1660ti is an interesting one as it’s not too much slower than a 2060, but about £100 cheaper, so seems like a pretty great value too.
