So, you’ve got about £1000 or $ to spend on a new gaming PC and you want to know where best to spend your money. Well, this system is a pretty compelling option. First, lets run down the specs, then we’ll build it, then we’ll benchmark it.

So, specs. Pretty simple, it’s a Ryzen 2600X, Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro. 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 500GB NVME SSD – although if you want to spend ~£50 less, there is a newer NVME SSD that’s a bit slower but still well worth a look – a 2TB hard drive, and an aftermarket air cooler – which again you can save ~£40 by dropping, nice case and 650W 80 Plus Gold PSU.

So, building it. That’s pretty simple too. Let’s start with the CPU. You lift up the arm on the motherboard, align the gold triangle on the chip to the triangle on the socket, then place it down and lower the arm. Sorted.

RAM is also pretty easy, as you open the tabs on either end, align the notch in the middle, then push firmly on either end.

While we are at it, we’ll install the SSD too. This one is the ADATA SX8200, a brilliant NVME SSD that’s a bit better value than the Samsung 970 Pros with similar performance. You can go with the new WD SN500 which is slower but almost half the price if you want to save some money though. Either way, installation is simple, attach the standoff post to the board on the hole marked “2280”, remove the screw from the top, and push the SSD into the slot at a bit of an angle, then hold it down and screw it in at the back.

And the last thing before we start on the case is the CPU Cooler. Now you can go with the stock cooler that comes with the 2600X – it’s really quite good – but if you want your system to be a bit quieter, and bit better temps, then this Cooler Master MasterAir Pro 4 is a good shout. Another great option is also the Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo – which is a bit cheaper too and dual fan. Installation on this is easy enough, drop a bit of thermal paste on, attach the AM4 bracket to the cooler, put the cooler down on top and hook the two eyelets over the edges on the brackets on the motherboard, then tighten the screws on top down. And don’t forget to reattach the fan. And plug it in.

Let’s get some case prep done. First we have to get the power supply in. For this, you just slide it in from the side, and attach your 4 screws to the back. This one is fully modular so you will want to attach your cables you’ll need first, so in this case we need the 24 pin, 8 pin CPU, 8 pin GPU, and some SATA power too.

Then we’ll put the motherboard in. This means we need all the standoffs installed – check your case manual for where they go for the type of motherboard you have. For ATX boards like this one there are 9 in total in rows of 3 at the top middle and bottom.

Once that’s in, we need to wire everything up. This is pretty easy, just clicking the connectors in, so the 24 pin, 8pin up top, HDD power – and the SATA cable for the HDD too – then comes the GPU.

This one is a rather tiny ZOTAC GTX 1660TI Twin fan, and slots in easily, with the 8 pin power to wrap up the build. Doesn’t she look beautiful?

So, performance then. Let’s see how it does!
