If you are still rocking an old FX CPU from AMD, like my original FX 8120 I bought 7 years ago now, and you’ve maybe recently upgraded your GPU to something like an RTX 2060 and now are thinking about a CPU upgrade, well, this video should be of interest for you. And even if you are not, you might be surprised at the results…

The Ryzen CPU I’m testing with is actually the 2600X. I chose this one to test with since it’s the most likely “real world” choice if you were upgrading, plus the gaming results are pretty close to the 2700X which helps.

So, why an RTX 2060 and not say a 2080ti. Well, as I mentioned the idea here is to see real world performance, if you’ve recently upgraded your GPU but still running an old CPU and want to get some extra performance in your favourite games, and maybe even better productivity usage too. So with that said, let’s have a look at the benchmark results.

All 4 games, Battlefield V, Apex Legends, PUBG and Fortnite were run at 1080p, and were generally on very high/ultra/epic settings. BFV was with DXR off but DX12. Let’s look at the numbers.

BFV, 36% more performance (70 to 95)

As you’ve just seen, this is a pretty incredible upgrade in quite a few titles. Apex was the only real ‘outlier’ here, with “only” 12% performance increase, although it is source engine so that’s something. The other games all showed pretty dramatic increases, ranging from 34% in Fortnite, all the way up to 41% in PUBG. All those differences are definitely noticeable, especially with a 144hz display, and honestly just the general usability was much, much better.

Of course you also get a load more features, like M.2, USB C, proper USB 3 support and in my experience – i used this very 8120 as my main gaming PC for 3+ years, and have been using Ryzen CPUs for the last 2 years full time – Ryzen is a much more stable platform with easier overclocking and usability.

So if you are considering an upgrade from your old FX CPU, then rest assured if you switch to Ryzen you are going to see great performance, and generally have a pretty great time.

Of course, 3rd gen Ryzen isn’t too far away, so if you want to see me test this 8120 against the new Ryzen CPUs too, let me know in the comments!
