If you are looking for a new SSD for your gaming PC, or maybe just want an upgrade because your current drive is full, this guide should help you! I’m going to break down each type of SSD and give you a recommendation for each, from the budget SATA SSDs, all the way up to the best of the best, and a few inbetween too.

But first, a message from this video’s sponsor, Asrock!

We are going to start off with the budget SSDs – which are almost always SATA drives. SATA is the connection type, and indicates how fast the SSD is, generally it maxes out at 600MB/s read/write, although some of the more budget SATA drives can be more like 3/400MB/s on writes. They also tend to come in the more ‘standard’ 2.5” drive style, like this, which will fit the vast majority of desktops and laptops. You can buy SATA SSDs in the M.2 form factor, but they tend to be a little more expensive for the same capacity and won’t always fit every PC, especially if it’s more than a few years old.

So, what do I recommend here? Pretty simple. The Kingston A400 is incredibly cheap while still providing great performance. It’s not the fastest in the world on writes at around 230MB/s, but it gets the job done, and at just £26 for a 240GB drive – or £48 for a 500GB drive – it’s well worth a look.

If you want full SATA performance, perhaps you want the best your PC can handle if it doesn’t have any M.2 slots, then the Samsung 860 EVO is where to look. It’s more expensive than the kingston a400, in fact almost double, but you get more than double the write performance, at over 500MB/s reads and writes.

Moving up in performance, and generally price, we have the budget NVME SSDs. Again, NVME is the connection type, and means the drive can be nearing 3GB/s on reads and, in theory, writes too. These more budget options don’t tend to get there, but are still pretty amazing, especially for their price.

The drive I recommend here is the WD Blue SN500 – sadly they only do a 250GB and 500GB model at the moment, although more capacities should be out soon – it provides incredible performance for basically the same price as the 860 EVO, with around 1.7GB/s reads, and 1.3-1.4GB/s writes, this is crazy fast. This is perfect for a new gaming PC as it balances performance with price well, and should fit most new motherboards.

And finally, the high end. The best of the best. This one, hands down, goes to the WD Black SN750. This thing can do 3GB/s reads AND writes, in fact 3.4GB/s reads, it’s £30 cheaper than the Samsung 970 Pro, for the 500GB model and is generally impressive. I use the SN700 in my main gaming and editing PC and love it, so I’m more than happy to recommend it.

There is one honourable mention in the high end NVME space, the ADATA SX8200 Pro. It’s about £15 cheaper than the WD Black, while being close to as fast, so if you want 90% of the performance for 90% of the money, that’s where I’d head.
