MSI GE75 First Look
|MSI’s GE range started off gaming laptops started life as quite a budget friendly gaming laptop – with top tier specs but a plastic body – rather than the metal their more premium GS laptops had at the time. Now though, they’ve been upgraded to be a bit more premium than they were with a metal clamshell top and keyboard plate, while still keeping the plastic base and the not-crazy slim design.
They’ve actually just refreshed the look of the GE line too, so in this video I’m going to take you around this 17” model – the GE75, but since it’s an engineering sample, I can’t give you any benchmark numbers – and therefore can’t fully review it (although if you want to see a full review, do let me know in the comments!)
Let’s start the tour with the bit you can’t see under the, wait, how many T H I C C heatpipes? Ok, we will come back to that… the specs… There are 3 models to choose from. All 3 have the new 9750H i7 from Intel, 512GB of RAID 0 M.2 SSDs, plus a 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDD, 16GB of DDR4 2666Mhz RAM, with the main difference being with RTX GPU you get.
It starts off at £2000 with the RTX 2060, it’s £200 extra for an RTX 2070, and a further £500 for the 2080 model – which is the one I have here. Display wise, it’s a 1080p, 144hz, “IPS-Level” display – for whatever that’s worth – which is actually pretty nice, and rather nice to play games on too.
The keyboard is the usual nice feel, although still no UK ISO layout – cough, MSI, cough – but more importantly it’s also nice for gaming too.
I/O wise, you’ve got a fair bit. You’ve got illuminated USB ports, which is great when you are trying to plug a USB stick in at night and you have 0 clue which way is “up”. You’ve got Gigabit Ethernet, and of course AC WiFi built in, HDMI, MiniDP, USB C – no thunderbolt though – headphone and microphone jacks and an SD card reader. Pretty comprehensive.
Taking a peek inside, you’ll see the HUGE heatpipes keeping the up to RTX 2080 and 9750H cool, although the added heatpipes do impede upgradability, as the 2 RAM slots and the second M.2 SSD are both blocked by a low flying heatpipe – but they are still fully replaceable as long as you take the cooling unit off first.
Otherwise, I can’t say much more without branching too far into the “review” territory, so I will have to leave it there for this one – but like i said if you want to see me do a full review on one of these beasts, let me know in the comments – especially which model you’d like to see covered.
MSI have just refreshed their GE line of laptops, with RTX GPUs, and 9th Gen Intel CPUs, and a new shell too. They sent over an engineering sample to do a quick first look at, so here is that!
