Razer are rather well known for their premium products, often hearing the words “Razer Tax” when you hear the price tag for some of them, so when they told me they have a relatively cheap gaming headset, I was pretty surprised. The Kraken X is a penny under £50, making it the cheapest headset the sell, barring the “Electra”.

So with a relatively low price, what corners did they cut the make it there? Well build quality is one. It’s made from relatively cheap plastics, that don’t feel all that great in hand. It’s only got a slight amount of rotation on the ear cups and a plastic adjustment band, with relatively little reinforcing in the headband. Comfort with this isn’t great, for me anyway. Razer claims this is an “all day gaming headset”, but my head hurt after a few minutes. Now that tight clamping force will loosen over time as it wears in, so I can’t knock it too hard there.

Happily, the faux leather is nice quality, with decent enough padding on both the ear cups and the headband, it’s not what I’d call “plentiful”, but it’s enough.

Something that is very un-Razer, is it’s lack of RGB. Since it’s a 3.5mm headset – which does mean better compatibility across basically any device besides new phones – it can’t really have RGB, so you’ll have to deal with the fake open back styling on the side.

Audio quality is another area that isn’t perfect. Now, it’s not bad, and it’s certainly usable, but it does sound pretty muddy and appears to try and cover that with insane levels of bass – like shake your whole head bass – so be prepared for that.

Where this really redeems itself if the mic, here’s a quick test.

The elephant in the room here, or should I say on the shelf behind me, is Corsair’s new budget headset, the HS35. It launched a couple weeks after the Kraken X, but is selling for £35-40, with a very similar value proposition, except in my experience I’d say it has slightly better audio quality, and has a detachable microphone meaning you could more comfortably use them while not gaming too.

Now the one thing Razer did want to point out that could be their saving grace here, is their new 7.1 Surround software, which you have to use a product code which comes in the box to use. Personally, I’ve seen little benefit from digital surround in games, and so for me this isn’t a massive factor, but it could be for you.

So, would I put these on my desk? Well personally, no. I’m not a fan of the leather style ear cups, I personally prefer the fabric options as they make me sweat a lot less, and the HS35 for me is a better value proposition, plus was more comfortable on my head, so that’s where I’d head. Now that’s not to say this is bad, it certainly isn’t and it very well could be for you, if you prefer tighter fitting headsets, leather style ear cups, and 7.1 surround.
