MSI are rather good at making gaming laptops, they’ve been doing it for a while, and they know what we like. This is their GE65, their mid-range chassis, but with some top end specs. It’s a 9th gen i7 9750H, 16GB RAM, 1TB of NVME storage and a full fat RTX 2070. Now, it is a mobile package, which means it’s pretty much the performance of a desktop RTX 2060, but that’s still rather good.

Now, it isn’t perfect, when gaming that CPU and GPU do get pretty hot. Like, 100°c hot, on the CPU, and about 85°c on the GPU. That’s toastie. But, the fan noise isn’t too bad, certainly standard for a laptop of this spec, and not too obnoxious.

Performance though, well that’s just great. Here are some numbers.

Great FPS results are one thing, but being able to actually see them is another, since a lot of gaming laptops are still equipped with just 60hz displays, and some getting nicer 144hz ones. MSI decided that wasn’t quite enough though, and strapped this thing with a 240Hz panel instead, making this the smoothest gaming laptop I’ve gamed on, pretty much ever. It’s really, very nice to play games on, especially fast paced FPS games where you can really leverage the frame rate to your advantage.

Now you might think that since it’s 240Hz, it’s gonna be awful in the colours and viewing angle departments, but happily you’d be wrong. Viewing angles are decent, as is the colour accuracy, with around 95% coverage of the sRGB spectrum, it’s not gonna be your next photo editing, colour perfect machine, but it’s certainly good enough.

The keyboard isn’t bad either. It’s still a non-ISO layout which aggravates my british sensibilities, and has the FN key in the wrong place, but still, good, if a little mushy feel to the keys, well spaced, overall decent. Same with the track pad, no real issues there.

I/O is fairly filled too, with 3 illuminated USB ports, type c, mini displayport and HDMI, gigabit ethernet, an sd card reader and headphone and microphone jacks rounding out the collection. And of course stuff like AC wifi and some remarkably nice built in speakers too.

Battery life is fine, it’s a gaming laptop so you can only expect a few hours of web browsing, or about and hour of low power gaming before it runs dry, but it’s certainly not terrible.

The main downside here is the price, it’s around £2,200, which is actually cheaper than the Razer Blade 15 Advanced I reviewed recently, and has a better spec, namely full fat 2070 and 1TB of storage, rather than just 240GB, but when you compare it to something like the Acer Triton 500 which sells for more like £1,500, it can be a bit hard to justify.

But, if you want a powerful laptop that’s well built, good functionality, brilliant screen and a great gaming experience, and don’t mind the extra cost, then this very well could be for you. Would I put one on my desk? I think personally I’d go for the Triton 500 and save my money, but I certainly wouldn’t say no to one.
