So you’ve probably seen a few different creators talking about X570 motherboards vs B450 boards for gaming, using the Ryzen 9 CPUs and RTX 2080tis to remove as many bottlenecks as possible. And that’s cool, but most of you, well you don’t have RTX 2080tis. Or Ryzen 9s for that matter. So I thought, since the only 3rd gen Ryzen CPU I have right now is the 3600X, I’d do a mid range test with, well, the 3600X and an RTX 2060.

So, does it make a difference? Well, lets run you through why it might first. The main thing is power delivery to the CPU, the X570 boards are designed to run with up to 16 core CPUs, whereas B450 boards only ever needed to run up to 8 cores, and so the power setups aren’t quite as good, in general. This X570 TUF board from Asus uses a 12+2 phase design, whereas the B450m TUF board only has a 4+2 phase design with much lower end components.

With that said, for the 6 core 3600X, it really doesn’t matter. What might matter is the fact that I had to put my Ryzen 2700X in it and update the bios before my 3600X even worked. Obviously not everyone has a spare 2nd gen ryzen CPU (and different RAM for that matter) laying around ready to swap in, so do keep that in mind.

Now with that said, does it make a difference to your FPS? No not really. 3D Mark Firestrike, at 1080p, gave a pretty negligible difference, as did BFV. PUBG had a 3% INCREASE on B450, and Fortnite saw 5% better on B450, but that is well within the margin of error in these types of battle royal games.

Now of course, straight up CPU performance isn’t the only factor, X570 boards allow you to use PCIe Gen 4 SSDs which while they won’t give you better performance, might help your games to load a tad faster, but they are also pretty pricey and you’d probably be better spending that extra cash on a better GPU.

So, TL;DW, no it doesn’t make a difference with mid-range hardware. You just might run into compatibility issues and don’t have the same upgrade path to run the 12-16 core CPUs properly. But, for a budget build, it’s still likely worth it.
