240Hz monitors aren’t exactly new, I mean the Asus PG258Q launched back in early 2017, and pretty much every company has their own version, but this new “nitro” option from Acer, well it’s just a little bit special, let me show you why.

First, it’s price. Availability is a bit limited around the world, but at least in the USA, it’s selling for around $350, making it one of the cheapest 240Hz monitors around, just shy of the Alienware one.

Second, is it’s panel. It’s brilliant. It’s a TN as you’d expect, but it’s a full 240hz as you’d expect, with a black to white response time of around 3ms which is I think the fastest I’ve tested and has around 40ms of total system input lag, which isn’t bad either.

It’s great for gaming on, it’s smooth and responsive. I’m not quite the target audience for this, so the 240hz was a little lost on me, but that’s ok. I was still able to hit a few quick shots in CSGO, which is about all I can manage anyway.

Colours are also a strong point, within reason. It covers around 97% of the sRGB spectrum, which isn’t anything special when it comes to normal monitors, but for 240hz gaming monitors? That’s not bad. Viewing angles are really impressive for this type of monitor too, side to side, with only viewing from below being not so good.

The third thing that’s great about the monitor is actually it’s styling and stand. It’s a pretty subtle look, with nice thin, flush bezels, a small grey chin bar, and a round base with no “gamer” accents to be found. The stand is just a tiny black pole – although still has all the adjustability you’d expect, height adjust, tilt, unlimited swivel, and even rotation to put the display in portrait mode. Not bad. Even the back of the display is pretty tame, no programmable RGB to be found here.

I/O is also a pretty strong suit, with not only 2 HDMIs and a DisplayPort, but a 4 port USB 3 hub, with 2 side mounted ports too which is great to see. You do have freesync – and now therefore Gsync support – which worked well in my testing. I think the range is from 48hz up to the full 240hz.

So that’s the rundown, now here’s my thoughts. I really like it. It’s a brilliant gaming experience, but still nice to use on the daily, the subtle aesthetic also means it more likely to fit in your home office, rather than your gaming den, which is a great change from the Asus options, some of which literally project their logo on your ceiling.

To answer the usual question, would I put this on my desk, hands down yes. It’s such a good experience to use and at a pretty reasonable price, I can’t really argue.
