1080p 144hz IPS?? AOC 24G2U Review
|Surprisingly, despite how many 1440p 144hz IPS monitors there are, for a while now there basically hasn’t been a 1080p equivalent, until now. This is the AOC 24G2U and it’s amazing. Of course, the first thing we have to talk about is the panel. IPS is beautiful, colours look absolutely amazing, so from a content consumption side of things, I can wholly recommend this – it’s even pretty colour accurate at over 116% of the sRGB spectrum by volume, and around 80% of both AdobeRGB and DCI P3, making it one of the best 1080p 144hz monitors for colours anyway.
Now, you are probably wondering, how well does this work for gaming, is the panel too slow and ghosts a lot? Well, sort of. It’s hardly the fastest I’ve seen. It’s black to white response time seems to be in the 8-10ms range, which is a good bit slower than it’s TN rivals who are normally under 5ms. With that said, AOC must have done some brilliant magic here, as it’s total system input lag – ie from a mouse click to the gun firing in game, was around just 20ms, down from the usual 30-40 I see with basically every other monitor I’ve tested this way.
The result is a very responsive monitor, that runs true 144hz, which while it can ghost a little in especially light to dark situations, is something I enjoyed playing with and am more than happy to recommend as a great gaming experience. My time gaming with it was great, even if I still haven’t improved much at CS:GO…
Taking a look at the monitor itself, it’s pretty stylish, with only a subtle red accent at the bottom, and otherwise a pretty small stand that features the usual adjustments of height, tilt, swivel and rotation, should you prefer running this in portrait mode. I/O wise, it’s decently equipped, with 2 HDMIs, DisplayPort, VGA should you need to plug something we’d probably call ancient tech into it, and a USB 3 hub with a charging port.
I think the icing on the cake here is that this monitor, at least at the time of filming, in the UK, is under £190 – making it CHEAPER than AOC’s own G2590PX, by like £30! That means that as long as you are willing to deal with a slightly slower panel, you get brilliant colours, great viewing angles, and a great gaming experience which, I should mention, includes freesync – and therefore Gsync too which in my admittedly limited testing worked well for me.
So, would I put one on my desk? Definitely. It’s such a great experience to use and game on, so it really isn’t a hard decision for me there. Would I recommend it to you? Well, i think that’s pretty obvious, yes.
