AMD Althon 3000G Review – Terrible but Brilliant

Don’t get me wrong, for £65 at the time of filming, if you want a brand new CPU for your parents next home pc, or maybe a beginner gaming CPU, it’s hard to not recommend AMD’s new Athlon 3000G, it’s only a dual core with SMT, but for that little money, it’s certainly not bad.

To give you some context, despite the 3000 series branding, this is a Zen+ design, meaning it’s basically 2nd gen Ryzen. It’s also basically a refresh of the Althon 240GE, admittedly for a little cheaper, and now fully unlocked. While you won’t be able to squeeze too much out of it, being able to properly set higher speed memory, to say 3000MHz, is a nice advantage to have.

Now I tested this CPU for productivity, as well as gaming both with it’s integrated graphics, and with a dedicated GPU, so lets run you through those numbers. First, lets start with productivity. In the synthetic tests, Cinebench R20 showed reasonable performance, with a score of 872 on multithreaded which is pretty low, and 334 on single threaded which actually isn’t too bad. In premiere on my 10 minute test render, it took 50 minutes and 34 seconds, or around 3 times longer than a Ryzen 3600X. In blender you are looking at 16 minutes and 45 seconds to render the BMW scene, which again is pretty slow.

Gaming wise, on the integrated graphics you are generally going to have a bad time. Playing at 720p low settings you’ll get around 30FPS average on PUBG, with a minimum of just 22, in apex you get a pretty similar result, around 33FPS average with minimums down to just 20, and fortnite, well it’s the outlier here since it’s low settings actually sets render scale – even at 720p – to just 66%, so while you get 110FPS average, and a minimum of 73, you might find it hard to make out pretty much anything.

Gaming with a GPU definitely is better. For the sake of comparison, I used an RTX 2080ti here, Overkill to the extreme, I know, but the long and short of that is you are looking at around half the FPS of something like a Ryzen 3600X, admittedly for about a third of the price. Here’s the numbers.

PUBG avg: 91.6 min: 51 max: 130
APEX avg: 93 min: 62 max: 190
Fortnite avg: 84.43 min: 37 max: 116

So why is this video titled “Terrible but Brilliant”? Well, for the same money, you can buy a Ryzen 1200 brand new, which is an unlocked quad core using a very similar architecture but without SMT. This means that for gaming, and most productivity tasks, you are going to see a decent increase in performance, again for the same money. With that said, if you want this as an office PC style chip, it’s a decent choice thanks to it’s reasonable integrated graphics and slight speed advantage over the last gen Athlons.

If you really wanted a great deal on a gaming CPU, you can look to the used market and find a load of older Intel i5s, like the 4670K for the same price as this, but would provide a significantly better overall experience, assuming you were using a dedicated GPU at least. Of course at the end of the day it’s up to you to decide what is best for you, but if you are looking for a cheap gaming chip, this might not be your best bet. If you really want to game on integrated graphics, I’d suggest looking more towards the Ryzen 2200G and upwards, or if you want to use a graphics card, either used i5s, or something like the Ryzen 1200 instead.
